Operating Instructions
Making Espresso
- Prepare Water: Fill the glass carafe with fresh, cold water to your desired number of cups (e.g., 2-cup or 4-cup mark).
- Fill Water Reservoir: Unscrew the pressure cap and carefully pour the water from the carafe into the water reservoir. Securely replace the pressure cap.
- Add Coffee Grounds: Using the measuring spoon, add finely ground espresso coffee to the filter basket. For 2 cups, use 2 level spoons; for 4 cups, use 4 level spoons. Do not overfill.
- Tamp Coffee: Use the tamper end of the spoon to gently but firmly tamp down the coffee grounds. Ensure the surface is level.
- Attach Filter Holder: Insert the filter basket into the filter holder. Attach the filter holder to the machine by aligning it with the slot and twisting it firmly to the right until it locks into place.
- Position Carafe: Place the glass carafe on the drip tray directly beneath the filter holder.
- Brew Espresso: Plug in the machine. Turn the control knob to the “Brew” position. The indicator light will illuminate. Espresso will begin to drip into the carafe after a few moments.
- Monitor Brewing: Once the desired amount of espresso has been brewed (or when the water reservoir is empty), turn the control knob to the “Off” position.
- Release Pressure: Wait for the machine to cool down slightly before carefully unscrewing the pressure cap to release any remaining steam pressure.
- Serve: Pour the fresh espresso into cups and enjoy.
Frothing Milk (for Cappuccinos and Lattes)
- Prepare Milk: Fill a small pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) to about one-third full.
- Heat Machine: After brewing espresso, or if starting fresh, ensure there is water in the reservoir. Turn the control knob to the “Steam” position. The indicator light will illuminate. Wait for approximately 1-2 minutes for the machine to heat up and produce steam.
- Position Steam Wand: Submerge the tip of the steam wand just below the surface of the milk in the pitcher.
- Froth Milk: Slowly turn the control knob towards the “Steam” icon. Steam will begin to release from the wand. Move the pitcher up and down gently, keeping the wand tip just below the surface to create foam. For hotter milk, submerge the wand deeper.
- Stop Steaming: Once the milk has reached the desired temperature and froth, turn the control knob back to the “Off” position.
- Clean Steam Wand: Immediately wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to remove any milk residue. Briefly turn the control knob to “Steam” again to clear any milk from inside the wand, then turn off.
- Combine: Pour the frothed milk over your freshly brewed espresso.
Maintenance and Cleaning
Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your espresso machine.
Daily Cleaning
- After Each Use: Unplug the machine and allow it to cool. Remove the filter holder and discard used coffee grounds. Wash the filter holder, filter basket, and glass carafe in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
- Drip Tray: Empty and clean the drip tray regularly.
- Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.
- Steam Wand: As mentioned in the operating instructions, wipe the steam wand immediately after frothing milk and briefly purge steam to prevent clogging.
Descaling (Monthly or as Needed)
Mineral deposits from water can build up over time, affecting performance. Descale your machine regularly, especially if you have hard water.
- Prepare a descaling solution by mixing white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) or using a commercial descaling agent according to its instructions.
- Fill the water reservoir with the descaling solution.
- Place the empty carafe on the drip tray.
- Plug in the machine and turn the control knob to the “Brew” position. Allow half of the solution to brew through.
- Turn the control knob to “Off” and let the machine sit for 15-20 minutes to allow the solution to work.
- Turn the control knob back to “Brew” and allow the remaining solution to brew through.
- Discard the solution.
- Rinse the machine by repeating the brewing process with fresh, clean water at least twice to remove any residual descaling solution.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No coffee brews. | No water in reservoir; machine not plugged in; control knob not in 'Brew' position. | Fill reservoir; plug in machine; turn knob to 'Brew'. |
| Weak coffee. | Not enough coffee grounds; coffee too coarse; machine needs descaling. | Use more coffee; use finer grind; descale machine. |
| No steam from wand. | Steam wand clogged; machine not hot enough; no water in reservoir. | Clean wand; wait for machine to heat; add water. |
| Water leaks from machine. | Pressure cap not secured; filter holder not locked properly. | Tighten pressure cap; ensure filter holder is fully locked. |
