LogiLink WZ0015 Cable Tester User Manual

Model: WZ0015

1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper use, setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your LogiLink WZ0015 Cable Tester. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the device to ensure safe and efficient use. Keep this manual for future reference.

The LogiLink WZ0015 is designed to test various network and coaxial cables, including RJ45 (10 Base-T, EIA/TIA 568, AT&T 258A, Token Ring) and BNC (Coax) cables, for continuity, open circuits, short circuits, and incorrect wiring.

2. Product Overview

The LogiLink WZ0015 Cable Tester consists of a main unit and a detachable remote unit. Both units feature LED indicators to display cable test results.

2.1 Main Unit Features:

  • RJ45 Ports: Two ports for connecting network cables.
  • BNC Port: For connecting coaxial cables (often requires an adapter, not shown on this unit but implied by text).
  • PIN-OUT INDICATOR LEDs: Labeled 1 through 8 and G (Ground) to show the status of each wire.
  • Mode Switch: Allows selection between OFF, ON (Manual), and AUTO test modes.

2.2 Remote Unit Features:

  • RJ45 Port: One port for connecting the remote end of a network cable.
  • PIN-OUT INDICATOR LEDs: Labeled 1 through 8 and G (Ground) to correspond with the main unit's indicators.

2.3 Included Accessories:

The package typically includes:

  • Main Tester Unit
  • Remote Tester Unit
  • RJ45 Patch Cables (quantity may vary)
  • BNC Barrel Connector (for extending BNC cables or connecting to the tester)
  • RJ45 Port Covers (for protection)

3. Setup

3.1 Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the main unit.
  2. Open the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert the required battery type (typically a 9V battery, refer to the compartment label for exact specifications) ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

3.2 Connecting Cables for Testing

Ensure the cable to be tested is disconnected from all active network devices or power sources before connecting it to the tester.

  • For RJ45 Cables: Connect one end of the RJ45 cable to one of the RJ45 ports on the main unit. Connect the other end of the RJ45 cable to the RJ45 port on the remote unit.
  • For BNC Cables: Connect one end of the BNC cable to the BNC port on the main unit. Connect the other end of the BNC cable to the BNC port on the remote unit (if applicable, or use a BNC terminator if testing for continuity on a single run).

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Powering On and Off

Slide the mode switch on the main unit to the desired position:

  • OFF: Powers off the device.
  • ON (Manual): Powers on the device and allows manual step-through testing.
  • AUTO: Powers on the device and initiates an automatic, continuous test cycle.

4.2 Performing a Cable Test

Once the cable is connected and the unit is powered on, observe the LED indicators on both the main and remote units.

  • AUTO Mode: The LEDs will light up sequentially from 1 to 8 (and G) on both units, indicating the continuity of each wire. The sequence will repeat automatically.
  • ON (Manual) Mode: Press the 'TEST' button (if available, or cycle through by briefly switching to OFF and back to ON) to advance through each wire test step-by-step.

4.3 Interpreting LED Indicators

The LEDs on both the main and remote units correspond to the individual wires within the cable. A lit LED on both units for the same number indicates continuity for that specific wire.

Table 1: LED Indicator Interpretation
ObservationIndicationAction
Corresponding LEDs (e.g., 1 on main, 1 on remote) light up sequentially.Correct wiring, good continuity.Cable is functional.
An LED on the main unit lights up, but the corresponding LED on the remote unit does not.Open circuit (broken wire).Inspect or replace the cable.
An LED on the main unit lights up, and a different LED on the remote unit lights up simultaneously.Crossed wires.Inspect or re-terminate the cable.
Multiple LEDs light up simultaneously on either unit for a single test step.Short circuit.Inspect or re-terminate the cable.
No LEDs light up on either unit.No connection or power issue.Check cable connection, battery, or cable integrity.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the casing or internal components.

5.2 Storage

Store the cable tester in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for an extended period, remove the battery to prevent leakage.

5.3 Battery Replacement

When the LEDs become dim or the device fails to power on, it is time to replace the battery. Follow the battery installation steps in Section 3.1. Dispose of old batteries according to local regulations.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Device does not power on:
    • Check if the battery is correctly installed.
    • Replace the battery with a fresh one.
    • Ensure the mode switch is set to 'ON' or 'AUTO'.
  • Inconsistent or incorrect readings:
    • Ensure the cable is fully seated in both the main and remote unit ports.
    • Test with a known good cable to verify tester functionality.
    • Clean the connector pins on both the cable and the tester ports.
  • Remote unit LEDs do not light up:
    • Verify the cable is properly connected to both units.
    • The cable may have an open circuit on all wires.
    • Ensure the remote unit is securely attached or connected.
