Safety Information

Always exercise extreme caution when handling any utility knife. Blades are extremely sharp and can cause severe injury if not handled properly.

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves, when using or changing blades.
  • Keep fingers and body parts clear of the blade path during use and blade changes.
  • Ensure the blade is fully retracted when the knife is not in use.
  • Store the knife and spare blades out of reach of children and in a secure location.
  • Do not use dull or damaged blades. Replace them promptly to prevent accidents and ensure efficient cutting.
  • Dispose of used blades safely in a designated blade disposal container.
  • Do not apply excessive force when cutting. Let the sharp blade do the work.

Setup

1. Unpacking

Carefully remove the utility knife from its packaging. Inspect the knife for any signs of damage. If any damage is observed, do not use the tool and contact customer support.

2. Blade Installation / Replacement

The STANLEY Retractable Utility Knife features a quick-change blade mechanism. Always handle blades by their dull edges.

  1. Retract the blade fully into the handle if a blade is already installed.
  2. Locate the blade release button, typically a yellow button or slider on the side of the knife. Press and hold this button.
  3. Carefully slide the old blade out from the front of the knife. Dispose of it safely.
  4. Insert a new standard utility blade into the blade slot, ensuring the notched edge aligns with the internal mechanism.
  5. Push the blade fully into position until it clicks securely. Release the blade release button.
  6. Test the blade retraction and extension to ensure it is properly seated and operates smoothly.

Operating Instructions

1. Extending and Retracting the Blade

To extend the blade, push the slider forward with your thumb until the blade reaches the desired cutting depth. To retract, pull the slider back until the blade is fully enclosed within the handle.

2. Using the Utility Knife

Hold the knife firmly with a secure grip. Position the blade against the material to be cut. Apply steady, even pressure and guide the knife along the desired cutting line. Always cut away from your body.

3. Integrated String Cutter

Some models of this utility knife include an integrated string cutter. This feature allows for quick cutting of twine, cord, or thin straps without fully extending the main blade. Locate the dedicated notch or hook on the knife body and carefully position the string within it, then pull to cut.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

After each use, wipe down the knife handle and blade (when retracted) with a clean, dry cloth to remove any debris or residue. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, which can damage the tool's finish or components.

2. Blade Replacement

Refer to the "Blade Installation / Replacement" section under Setup for detailed instructions. Replace blades as soon as they become dull to maintain cutting efficiency and reduce the risk of injury.

3. Storage

Always ensure the blade is fully retracted before storing the knife. Store the knife in a dry, secure location, away from moisture and out of reach of children. The large hang hole allows for convenient pegboard storage.
