Introduction
The 3M Littmann Classic III Monitoring Stethoscope is a versatile instrument designed for clinicians to monitor and assess adult and pediatric patients in non-critical environments. It offers high acoustic sensitivity and a tunable diaphragm for exceptional performance in identifying, listening to, and studying heart, lung, and other body sounds for physical assessment, patient monitoring, and diagnosis.
Stethoscope Components
The Littmann Classic III Stethoscope consists of several key parts:
- Headset: Composed of eartubes, tension springs, and eartips.
- Eartips: Soft-sealing eartips provide comfort and an excellent acoustic seal.
- Tubing: Next-generation tubing designed for durability and resistance to skin oils and alcohol.
- Chestpiece: A two-sided chestpiece with tunable diaphragms for both adult and pediatric use.
- Diaphragm: Tunable diaphragm technology allows for hearing different frequency sounds by adjusting pressure.
- Non-chill Bell Sleeve: Provides patient comfort.

Setup and Assembly
Adjusting Headset Tension
The headset tension can be adjusted for head size and comfort. To decrease tension, pull the eartubes apart. To increase tension, squeeze the eartubes together. Ensure the eartips are securely snapped onto the eartubes.
Eartip Replacement
For safety, Littmann soft-sealing eartips snap firmly onto the eartubes and require significant effort to remove. To replace, firmly grasp the eartube and twist the eartip off. To attach new eartips, push them firmly onto the eartube until they snap into place.
Operation
Using the Tunable Diaphragm
The Classic III stethoscope features a two-sided chestpiece with tunable diaphragms on both the adult and pediatric sides. This technology allows you to hear different frequency sounds by simply adjusting the pressure applied to the chestpiece.
- Low-Frequency Sounds: Apply light pressure to the chestpiece to hear low-frequency sounds (e.g., Korotkoff sounds, Mitral Stenosis, S3 and S4 Gallops).
- High-Frequency Sounds: Apply firm pressure to the chestpiece to hear higher-frequency sounds.

Switching Between Adult and Pediatric Sides
The chestpiece can be rotated to select either the adult or pediatric side. The adult side is 1.7 inches (4.3 cm) and the pediatric side is 1.4 inches (3.4 cm). The pediatric side can also be converted into a traditional open bell by removing the tunable diaphragm and replacing it with the non-chill bell sleeve (included).

Care and Maintenance
Cleaning
Regular cleaning helps maintain the acoustic performance and extends the life of your stethoscope. Wipe the stethoscope with a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution or a disposable wipe with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Do not immerse your stethoscope in any liquid or subject it to sterilization processes.
Storage
Store your stethoscope away from extreme heat, cold, solvents, and oils. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
Disassembly for Cleaning
The tunable diaphragms can be removed from the chestpiece for cleaning. Gently peel the rim off the chestpiece. Clean the diaphragm and rim with alcohol or soapy water. Ensure all parts are completely dry before reassembly.
Reassembly
To reassemble the tunable diaphragm, place the diaphragm onto the chestpiece groove. Hold the chestpiece with one hand and roll the rim onto the edge of the diaphragm, working your way around the circumference until it is fully seated.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Poor Sound Quality | Loose eartips, blocked eartubes, incorrect chestpiece orientation, damaged tubing. | Ensure eartips are secure. Check eartubes for obstructions. Rotate chestpiece to activate the desired side. Inspect tubing for cracks or damage. |
| Eartips Falling Off | Improper attachment, worn eartips. | Reattach eartips firmly until they snap into place. Replace worn eartips with new ones. |
| Discomfort in Ears | Incorrect headset tension, wrong eartip size. | Adjust headset tension. Try different sized soft-sealing eartips for a better fit. |
