2. Safety Information
Observe the following safety precautions to prevent injury or damage to the product:
- Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the lock. This may void the warranty and compromise security.
- Use only the specified battery type (4 AA Alkaline batteries). Do not mix old and new batteries or different battery types.
- Ensure the door operates smoothly before installing the lock. The deadbolt motor is not designed to overcome significant resistance.
- Keep user codes confidential and change them regularly.
- Protect the keypad from extreme weather conditions and direct water exposure.
3. Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the optimal performance of your Yale Real Living Deadbolt. Refer to the included installation manual and door template for detailed steps.
3.1. Pre-Installation Check
Verify your door's compatibility before proceeding. The lock requires a minimum 2-1/8" cross bore and fits door thicknesses from 1-3/4" to 2-1/4".

3.3. Battery Installation
Install 4 AA alkaline batteries into the interior assembly. Ensure the deadbolt is retracted before installing batteries to allow for proper calibration.
3.4. Initial Programming (Master Code)
The first step after installation is to create a Master Entry Code. This code is used to access programming features and should be kept secure.
- Open the battery cover on the interior assembly.
- Press the programming button (usually located near the battery compartment).
- Enter a new 4-8 digit Master Entry Code on the exterior keypad, then press the ✓ (check) button.
- Re-enter the Master Entry Code and press the ✓ button to confirm.
The lock will confirm successful programming with an audible tone.
3.5. Z-Wave Pairing
Your Yale deadbolt is Z-Wave compatible, allowing integration with various smart home systems.

4.3. Auto-Lock Feature
The lock can be configured to automatically re-lock after a set period (e.g., 30 seconds). This feature enhances security by ensuring the door is always locked after closing. Refer to the programming guide for enabling and adjusting this setting.
4.4. Low Battery Indicator
When battery power is low, the lock will emit a series of warning beeps and the keypad lights may flash red when operated. Replace batteries promptly to avoid loss of function.
4.5. 9V Battery Jump-Start
In case of complete battery depletion, a 9V battery can be used to temporarily power the lock. Touch a 9V battery to the two terminals located at the bottom of the exterior keypad. While holding the 9V battery, enter your Entry Code to unlock the door.
5. Maintenance
5.1. Battery Replacement
Replace all four AA alkaline batteries when the low battery indicator appears. To replace, remove the interior battery cover, remove old batteries, insert new ones, and replace the cover. Ensure correct polarity.
5.2. Cleaning
Clean the lock's exterior surfaces with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the finish and electronic components.
5.3. Door Alignment
Periodically check that your door and frame are properly aligned and that the deadbolt extends and retracts smoothly without obstruction. Misalignment can cause excessive wear on the lock's motor and reduce battery life.
6. Troubleshooting
6.1. Lock Not Responding
- Check batteries: Ensure they are fresh and installed correctly. Use the 9V jump-start if necessary.
- Verify codes: Ensure the correct Master Entry Code or User Entry Code is being used.
6.2. Z-Wave Connectivity Issues
- Ensure the lock is within range of your Z-Wave controller.
- Try re-pairing the lock with your Z-Wave controller (exclusion then inclusion).
- Consult your Z-Wave controller's manual for network troubleshooting.
6.3. Factory Reset
A factory reset will delete all user codes and programming settings, restoring the lock to its original factory defaults. This should only be performed if other troubleshooting steps fail.
- Remove the battery cover and batteries.
- Remove the interior escutcheon to access the reset button.
- Press and hold the reset button (usually a small button on the circuit board).
- While holding the reset button, reinsert the batteries.
- Continue holding the reset button for 10 seconds until you hear a long beep.
- Release the reset button.
After a factory reset, you must create a new Master Entry Code before any other programming.
