1. Introduction

2. Package Contents

Before beginning installation, please verify that all components are present in your package:

3. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to correctly install your SIGMA BC500 bicycle computer:

3.1. Computer Unit Preparation

The computer unit comes with a pre-installed battery. Ensure the battery tab is removed if present. The unit can be attached to or detached from its bracket.

3.2. Bracket and Sensor Installation

The wired bracket and sensor are integrated. Attach the bracket to your handlebar or stem using the provided O-rings or cable ties. Position the sensor on the front fork so that it aligns with the spoke magnet.

3.3. Spoke Magnet Attachment

Attach the magnet to a spoke on your front wheel. Ensure the magnet passes within 5mm of the sensor as the wheel rotates. Adjust the sensor and magnet positions as needed for optimal signal detection.

3.4. Wheel Size Setting

Accurate speed and distance readings depend on correct wheel size calibration. Refer to the table below or your bicycle's tire sidewall for your wheel's circumference. Access the settings menu on your BC500 (usually by holding a button) to input this value.

4. Operating Instructions

The SIGMA BC500 features a simple, intuitive interface. Use the single button on the front of the unit to cycle through the various functions.

4.1. Functions Overview

  • Speed: Displays your current riding speed.
  • Trip Distance: Shows the distance covered during your current ride. This value can be reset.
  • Total Distance: Accumulates the total distance covered by the bicycle computer over its lifetime. This value is generally not resettable by the user.
  • Trip Time: Records the duration of your current ride. This value can be reset.
  • Clock: Displays the current time.

4.2. Button Operation

The BC500 typically has one main button for navigation. A short press cycles through the functions. A long press (hold) usually accesses settings or resets trip-specific data (e.g., trip distance, trip time). Refer to the quick start guide for specific button press durations for setting the clock or wheel size.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Battery Replacement

The SIGMA BC500 uses a Lithium metal battery (CR2032). The battery life is approximately 2 years. When the display becomes dim or erratic, it's time to replace the battery. To replace, carefully open the battery compartment on the back of the computer unit using a coin or small screwdriver. Insert the new battery with the positive (+) side facing up. Ensure the O-ring seal is properly seated before closing the compartment to maintain splash protection.

5.2. Cleaning

Clean the computer unit and sensor with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the display or casing. The unit is splash-proof, but avoid submerging it in water.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your SIGMA BC500, try the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Speed/Distance Reading:
    • Check the alignment of the sensor and magnet. They should be within 5mm of each other.
    • Ensure the magnet is securely attached to the spoke.
    • Verify the wired connection from the sensor to the bracket and from the bracket to the computer unit.
    • Check the battery. Replace if necessary.
  • Incorrect Readings:
    • Verify that the correct wheel circumference is set in the computer's settings.
  • Display is Blank or Dim:
    • Replace the battery.
    • Ensure the computer unit is properly seated in the bracket.
