4. Operating Instructions

Eclipse Optic Cleaning Fluid is designed for precise application. Always use with appropriate cleaning accessories such as Sensor Swabs for camera sensors or PEC*PAD non-abrasive wipes for lenses and other optical glass surfaces.

4.1. Cleaning Camera Sensors (CCD/CMOS)

For cleaning camera sensors, use Eclipse fluid with Photographic Solutions Sensor Swabs. Ensure you are in a clean, dust-free environment.

Steps for cleaning a camera sensor with Eclipse fluid and Sensor Swab

Image 4.1: Visual guide for sensor cleaning using Eclipse and Sensor Swab ULTRA.

  1. Prepare: Remove the lens from your camera to expose the sensor. Ensure the camera battery is fully charged to prevent the shutter from closing during cleaning.
  2. Initial Dust Removal: Safely blow off any loose dust or dirt from the sensor using a clean, dust-free air blower (e.g., Orbit HEPA Blower). Do not use canned air, as it can leave residue.
  3. Apply Fluid: Dispense 2-3 drops of Eclipse Optic Cleaning Fluid onto one side of a clean Sensor Swab. Ensure the swab tip is adequately moistened but not saturated.
  4. First Pass: Gently drag the moistened side of the swab across the sensor surface in one continuous motion, from one end to the other. Apply even, light pressure.
  5. Second Pass: Flip the swab to its clean, unused side. Drag this side across the sensor in the opposite direction, again with a single, continuous motion.
  6. Discard: Immediately discard the used swab. Do not reuse swabs.
  7. Inspect: Re-attach a lens, take a test shot of a plain, bright surface (like a white wall or clear sky) at a small aperture (e.g., f/22), and inspect the image for any remaining dust or streaks.
  8. Repeat (if necessary): If dust or streaks remain, repeat steps 3-6 using a new Sensor Swab.

4.2. Cleaning Lenses and Other Optical Glass Surfaces

For cleaning lenses, filters, and other optical glass surfaces, use Eclipse fluid with PEC*PAD non-abrasive wipes. This method helps prevent hazy swirls.

Steps for cleaning a lens with Eclipse fluid and PEC*PAD wipes

Image 4.2: Visual guide for lens cleaning using Eclipse and PEC*PAD non-abrasive wipes.

  1. Initial Dust Removal: Use a clean, dust-free air blower to remove any loose dust or grit from the optical surface. This prevents scratching during wiping.
  2. Prepare Wipe: Fold a PEC*PAD non-abrasive wipe into a convenient size.
  3. Apply Fluid: Dispense several drops of Eclipse Optic Cleaning Fluid onto a corner or edge of the folded PEC*PAD.
  4. Clean Surface: Gently wipe the optical surface in a single, continuous direction, starting from the center and moving towards the outer edge.
  5. "Drag Off" Technique: As you reach the edge of the lens, gently lift and "drag off" the wipe from the surface. This helps to remove any lifted contaminants.
  6. Minimize Contact: Handle the PEC*PAD as little as possible to minimize the transfer of finger oils.
  7. Repeat (if necessary): If the surface is still dirty, refold the PEC*PAD to expose a clean side or use a fresh wipe. Apply more fluid and repeat the cleaning process until the surface is clean and clear. Never reuse a dirty portion of the wipe.

5. Maintenance and Storage

To ensure the longevity and effectiveness of your Eclipse Optic Cleaning Fluid:

  • Always replace the cap tightly after each use to prevent evaporation and contamination.
  • Store the bottle upright in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Avoid storing in humid environments, as the fluid may attract moisture once opened.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Streaks or Residue Remain: This typically indicates that the cleaning swab or wipe was either too dry, oversaturated, or reused. Ensure you are using a fresh, properly moistened swab/wipe for each pass and applying consistent, light pressure.
  • Persistent Dust/Dirt: If stubborn particles remain, ensure thorough initial dust removal with an air blower. For sensors, ensure the correct size Sensor Swab is used. For lenses, ensure the PEC*PAD is folded to provide a clean, firm surface.
  • Fluid Dries Too Quickly: Eclipse is designed to dry quickly. Work efficiently and ensure the swab/wipe is adequately moistened for the entire pass.
