4. Setup
4.1. Battery Installation and Initial Charge
The Sangean MMR-88 comes with a pre-installed lithium-ion battery. For optimal performance, it is recommended to fully charge the radio before first use.
- Locate the battery compartment on the rear of the radio.
- Ensure the battery is securely seated.
- Connect the supplied USB to Mini USB cable to the radio's Micro USB-B input port (DC IN 5V / 0.5A), located under the protective flap on the side.
- Connect the other end of the USB cable to a powered USB port (e.g., computer, USB wall adapter). The charge indicator light will illuminate.
- Allow the radio to charge until the charge indicator light changes or turns off, indicating a full charge.
4.2. Antenna Extension
For optimal FM and Weather band reception, extend the telescopic antenna fully. For AM reception, the internal ferrite antenna is used, and the telescopic antenna is not required.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Power On/Off
Press the Power button () located on the top right of the front panel to turn the radio on or off.
5.2. Band Selection (AM/FM/Weather)
Press the BAND button to cycle through AM, FM, and Weather (WX) bands. The selected band will be displayed on the LCD screen.
5.3. Tuning and Volume Control
- Tuning: Use the Tuning Up (
) and Tuning Down (
) buttons to manually adjust the frequency. Press and hold to auto-scan for the next available station.
- Volume: Use the VOL + and VOL - buttons to increase or decrease the audio volume.
5.4. Setting Presets
The radio allows for 19 preset stations (combined for AM/FM). To set a preset:
- Tune to the desired station.
- Press and hold the PRESET button until the preset number flashes on the display.
- Use the Tuning Up or Tuning Down buttons to select the desired preset number.
- Press the PRESET button again to confirm and save the station.
- To recall a preset, briefly press the PRESET button and then use the Tuning Up or Tuning Down buttons to select the desired preset.
5.5. Weather Alert Function
The MMR-88 is a Public Alert-certified weather radio. To activate the weather alert function:
- Ensure the radio is on the WX band.
- Press the WX ALERT button. The display will show "ALERT ON" or similar indication.
- When an official NOAA weather alert is broadcast, the radio will automatically switch on and emit a loud siren to notify you.
- To deactivate the alert, press the WX ALERT button again.
5.6. Flashlight and Siren Operation
The radio includes a built-in LED flashlight and an emergency siren.
- Flashlight: Press the dedicated flashlight button (usually located on the side or top) to turn the flashlight on. Some models may have multiple brightness settings or SOS flash modes, which can be cycled by pressing the button repeatedly.
- Siren: Press the Siren button (often labeled with a bell or alarm icon) to activate the emergency siren. Press it again to turn it off.

5.7. Charging External Devices (Smartphone Charger)
The MMR-88 can provide emergency power to external devices via its USB output port.
- Locate the DC OUT (5V / 0.3A) USB A type socket under the protective flap on the side of the radio.
- Connect your device's USB charging cable to this port.
- The radio will begin charging your device. Note that the output is 0.3A, which may result in slower charging compared to standard wall chargers.
5.8. Charging the Radio (Hand Crank & Solar)
In addition to USB charging, the radio can be charged using its integrated hand crank and solar panel.
- Hand Crank: Unfold the hand crank handle located on the back of the radio. Rotate the handle clockwise or counter-clockwise at a steady pace to generate power. A few minutes of cranking can provide sufficient power for short periods of use.
- Solar Panel: Place the radio with its solar panel (located on the top surface) facing direct sunlight. The solar panel will slowly charge the internal battery. This method is ideal for maintaining charge over extended periods or for trickle charging.

6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the radio with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: When storing for extended periods, ensure the battery is fully charged. Recharge the battery every 3-6 months to maintain its lifespan. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
