Emsco Group Rescue 50 Gallon Whiskey Rain Barrel Instruction Manual

Model: 2242-1

Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Emsco Group Rescue 50 Gallon Whiskey Rain Barrel. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your rain barrel. Please read these instructions carefully before installation and retain them for future reference.

Safety Information

  • Ensure the rain barrel is placed on a stable, level surface to prevent tipping, especially when full.
  • Keep children and pets away from the rain barrel during installation and when it is full of water.
  • Do not drink water collected from the rain barrel. It is intended for gardening and outdoor use only.
  • Empty the rain barrel before moving it.
  • In freezing conditions, ensure the barrel is drained to prevent damage from ice expansion.

Package Contents

Verify that all components are present before beginning installation:

  • 1 x Emsco Group Rescue 50 Gallon Whiskey Rain Barrel
  • 1 x Spigot
  • 1 x Overflow hose/connector (may vary by model)

Setup

  1. Choose a Location: Select a flat, stable area near a downspout. The barrel should be elevated slightly to allow gravity to assist with water flow when using the spigot. Consider placing it on a sturdy stand or pavers.
  2. Install Spigot: Locate the pre-drilled hole near the bottom of the barrel. Thread the spigot into this hole, ensuring a tight, leak-free seal. Hand-tighten only.
  3. Connect to Downspout: You will need a downspout diverter kit (sold separately) to direct rainwater from your gutter system into the rain barrel. Follow the instructions provided with your diverter kit for proper installation. Ensure the diverter outlet aligns with the rain barrel's inlet.
  4. Overflow Management: The rain barrel includes an overflow port. Attach an overflow hose (if provided) to this port and direct it away from your foundation or to another rain barrel in a series. This prevents water from pooling around the barrel when it is full.
  5. Optional Planter Top: The top of the rain barrel is designed to function as a planter. You can add soil and plants to this area for aesthetic appeal. Ensure drainage holes in the planter section are clear.

Operating

  • Water Collection: Once connected to a downspout via a diverter, rainwater will automatically flow into the barrel. The 50-gallon capacity allows for significant water storage.
  • Accessing Water: To dispense water, open the spigot located near the bottom of the barrel. You can attach a standard garden hose to the spigot for directed watering or fill watering cans directly.
  • Overflow Function: When the barrel reaches its full capacity, excess water will exit through the overflow port. Ensure the overflow hose is directed to a suitable drainage area or another collection point.
  • Planter Use: The integrated planter on top allows for decorative planting. Ensure that the planter's drainage holes are not obstructed to prevent waterlogging of plants.

Maintenance

  • Regular Cleaning: Periodically inspect the inside of the barrel for sediment buildup. Drain the barrel completely and rinse it out with a garden hose. A mild soap solution can be used for stubborn grime, followed by thorough rinsing.
  • Spigot Check: Ensure the spigot operates smoothly and does not leak. Tighten if necessary, but avoid over-tightening.
  • Gutter and Diverter Maintenance: Regularly clean your gutters and downspout diverter to prevent debris from entering the rain barrel and clogging the system.
  • Winterization: Before the first freeze, completely drain the rain barrel. Disconnect any hoses and the downspout diverter. Store the barrel in a sheltered area or turn it upside down to prevent water accumulation and potential damage from freezing.

Troubleshooting

  • Slow Water Flow from Spigot: Check for debris inside the barrel near the spigot opening. Ensure the spigot is fully open.
  • Barrel Not Filling: Verify that the downspout diverter is correctly installed and functioning. Check for blockages in the downspout or diverter.
  • Leaks: Inspect all connections, especially the spigot and overflow port. Tighten connections if loose. If a leak persists, apply a waterproof sealant suitable for plastics.
  • Overflowing When Not Full: Ensure the inlet from the diverter is properly aligned and not causing water to splash out. Check for internal blockages preventing water from settling.
