Product Overview

The Alessi Ossidiana MT18/3 coffee maker, designed by Mario Trimarchi, is crafted from polished aluminum. Its ergonomic design ensures a comfortable and secure grip during assembly and disassembly. Setup Instructions

  1. Unpack and Clean: Carefully unpack all components. Before first use, wash all parts (upper chamber, filter funnel, lower chamber, gasket) with warm water and mild soap. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  2. Fill Lower Chamber with Water: Unscrew the upper chamber from the lower chamber. Fill the lower chamber with cold water up to the level of the safety valve. Do not overfill.
  3. Insert Filter Funnel: Place the metal filter funnel into the lower chamber.
  4. Add Coffee Grounds: Fill the filter funnel with finely ground coffee. Do not tamp the coffee. Level the grounds gently without pressing them down. Ensure no coffee grounds are on the rim of the filter or the lower chamber.
  5. Assemble the Coffee Maker: Carefully screw the upper chamber onto the lower chamber, ensuring a tight seal. Hold the lower chamber firmly and twist the upper chamber until it is securely closed. Avoid using the handle for leverage during tightening.
  6. Place on Heat Source: Place the assembled coffee maker on a stovetop burner. Use a heat source appropriate for the size of the base to prevent the handle from overheating.

Operating Instructions

  1. Heat Application: Turn on the stovetop burner to a medium-low heat setting. The flame should not extend beyond the base of the coffee maker to protect the handle.
  2. Brewing Process: As the water in the lower chamber heats, pressure will build, forcing hot water up through the coffee grounds in the filter funnel and into the upper chamber.
  3. Monitor Brewing: Listen for a gurgling sound, which indicates that the brewing process is complete and all the water has passed through the coffee.
  4. Remove from Heat: Once the upper chamber is full and the gurgling sound is heard, immediately remove the coffee maker from the heat source to prevent the coffee from burning or becoming bitter.
  5. Serve: Pour the freshly brewed espresso into small cups. The handle is designed for safe pouring.

Care and Maintenance

  • Immediate Cleaning: After each use, allow the coffee maker to cool completely. Disassemble all parts. Discard used coffee grounds.
  • Hand Wash Only: Wash all components by hand with warm water and a mild detergent. Do not wash in a dishwasher, as this can damage the aluminum and affect the coffee flavor.
  • Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse all parts thoroughly to remove any soap residue.
  • Dry Completely: Dry all parts completely before reassembling or storing to prevent oxidation and mineral buildup.
  • Gasket and Filter Maintenance: Periodically check the rubber gasket and filter plate for wear and tear. Replace them if they appear damaged or if you notice leaks during brewing.
  • Storage: Store the disassembled coffee maker in a dry place.

Troubleshooting

Coffee is not brewing or brewing too slowly:
Ensure the lower chamber is filled with water up to the safety valve. Check that the coffee grounds are not tamped too tightly, which can restrict water flow. Verify that the heat source is adequate and consistent.
Coffee tastes weak or watery:
Check the grind size of your coffee; it might be too coarse. Ensure the filter funnel is adequately filled with coffee grounds. Make sure the coffee maker is removed from heat immediately after brewing is complete to prevent over-extraction.
Water leaks from the side:
Ensure the upper and lower chambers are screwed together tightly. Check the rubber gasket for proper placement and condition; replace if it is worn or damaged. Avoid overfilling the water chamber beyond the safety valve.
Burnt taste:
Remove the coffee maker from the heat source as soon as brewing is complete. Use a medium-low heat setting to prevent the coffee from burning. Ensure the flame does not extend beyond the base of the pot.
