5. Setup Guide

  1. Unpack and Inspect: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect for any damage.
  2. Prepare Filter Media:
    • Open the canister by releasing the clips and lifting the filter head.
    • Arrange the provided filter media into the four media trays. A common arrangement is coarse sponge at the bottom, followed by ceramic rings, bio-balls, and then activated carbon and fine filter pads at the top. Rinse all media thoroughly before placement.
    • Stack the trays back into the canister body.
  3. Secure Filter Head: Place the filter head back onto the canister body, ensuring the gasket is properly seated. Secure all clips firmly.
  4. Connect Hoses:
    • Attach the green hoses to the inlet and outlet valves on the filter head. Ensure a tight connection.
    • Connect the other ends of the hoses to the intake and output pipe assemblies.

  5. Install in Aquarium: Place the intake pipe (with strainer) and output pipe (e.g., spray bar) inside the aquarium using the provided suction cups. Ensure the intake is submerged and the output is positioned for optimal water circulation.
  6. Position Filter: Place the canister filter below the aquarium water level to facilitate proper water flow and priming.
  7. Prime the Pump: The HW-304B features a self-priming pump. Ensure all hoses are connected and the filter is below the water level. Open the inlet and outlet valves. The pump should draw water into the canister. If it doesn't prime automatically, you may need to manually pump the priming button on the filter head a few times until water fills the unit.
  8. Power On: Once the filter is full of water and all connections are secure, plug the filter into a grounded electrical outlet. The filter should begin operating.

6. Operating Instructions

After successful setup, the filter will continuously circulate and purify your aquarium water. The 9-watt UV sterilizer operates automatically when the filter is powered on. Some models may include a separate on/off switch for the UV lamp, typically located on the filter head. Refer to your specific model for UV control options.

Monitor water flow and clarity. Initial cloudiness may occur as beneficial bacteria establish themselves; this should clear within a few days.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal filter performance and water quality.

  • Monthly Cleaning (or as needed):
    • Disconnect power to the filter.
    • Close the inlet and outlet valves to prevent water backflow.
    • Disconnect the hoses from the filter head.
    • Transport the filter to a suitable cleaning area.
    • Open the canister and remove the media trays.
    • Rinse mechanical filter pads (blue coarse, white fine) in old aquarium water to preserve beneficial bacteria. Replace if heavily clogged or deteriorated.
    • Rinse biological media (ceramic rings, bio-balls) gently in old aquarium water. Avoid tap water, which can kill beneficial bacteria.
    • Replace activated carbon every 2-4 weeks as it becomes saturated.
    • Clean the impeller and impeller housing in the filter head.
    • Reassemble the filter, ensuring the gasket is clean and properly seated.
  • UV Lamp Replacement: The 9-watt UV lamp has a limited lifespan (typically 6-12 months of continuous use). Replace the UV lamp annually or when its effectiveness diminishes. Always use a genuine SunSun replacement lamp.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Reduced Water Flow:
    • Check if filter media is clogged. Clean or replace as necessary.
    • Inspect hoses for kinks or blockages.
    • Clean the impeller and impeller housing for debris.
  • Leaking:
    • Ensure the filter head gasket is clean, properly seated, and not damaged. Replace if necessary.
    • Verify all hose connections are tight and secure.
    • Check that the canister clips are fully engaged.
  • Filter Not Starting:
    • Ensure the power cord is securely plugged in.
    • Check for power outages or tripped circuit breakers.
    • Verify the impeller is not jammed.
    • Ensure the filter is properly primed with water.
  • Cloudy Water:
    • Perform a partial water change.
    • Check and clean filter media.
    • Ensure the UV sterilizer is functioning (if applicable).
    • Allow time for beneficial bacteria to establish in new setups.
