2. Setup and Initial Use

2.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully unpack the Extech VPC300 and all accessories. Verify that all components listed in the packing contents are present and undamaged. If any items are missing or damaged, contact your supplier immediately.

2.2 Charging the Battery

Before initial use, fully charge the internal 7.4V NiMH battery using the provided universal AC adapter/charger. Connect the charger to the device and a power outlet. The charging indicator will show the battery status. A full charge ensures optimal performance and battery life.

2.3 Inserting a MicroSD Card (Optional)

The VPC300 has internal memory, but for extended data and video storage, a microSD card (not included) is recommended. Locate the microSD card slot, typically on the side or bottom of the device. Insert the card gently until it clicks into place. Ensure the card is formatted correctly by the device if prompted.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Powering On/Off

Press and hold the power button (usually marked with a power symbol) to turn the device on or off. The 2.8" TFT color LCD display will illuminate, showing the main measurement interface.

3.2 Particle Measurement

The VPC300 measures particle sizes in six channels: 0.3µm, 0.5µm, 1.0µm, 2.5µm, 5.0µm, and 10µm. To initiate a measurement cycle:

  1. Ensure the device is in a stable position or held steadily.
  2. Press the "RUN/STOP" button to begin sampling.
  3. The display will show real-time particle counts for each channel, along with air temperature and relative humidity.
  4. Press "RUN/STOP" again to pause or stop the measurement.

3.3 Capturing Videos and Photos

The built-in 320x240 pixel camera allows for visual documentation of measurement environments.

  • To take a photo: Navigate to the camera mode using the device's menu buttons. Press the designated button (refer to the device's on-screen prompts) to capture a JPEG image.
  • To record a video: In camera mode, select video recording. Press the designated button to start and stop recording 3GP video files.

Captured media is stored on the internal memory (74 MB) or the inserted microSD card. The device can store up to 5,000 records (date, time, humidity, temperature, sample volumes, location, measurements) and approximately 20 minutes of video.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning the Device

To maintain the accuracy and longevity of your VPC300, regularly wipe the exterior with a clean, damp cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the casing or display. Ensure the particle inlet and sensor areas are free from dust and debris.

4.2 Battery Care

The device uses a 7.4V NiMH battery. To prolong battery life, avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. Recharge the battery when the low battery indicator appears. If the device will not be used for an extended period, store it with a partial charge and recharge periodically.

4.3 Calibration

The VPC300 comes with a NIST-traceable calibration certificate. Regular recalibration is recommended to ensure continued accuracy, especially for critical applications. Refer to the calibration certificate for recommended intervals or contact Extech support for recalibration services.

5. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Device does not power on.Battery is fully discharged or faulty.Connect the AC adapter to charge the battery. If the issue persists, the battery may need replacement.
Screen freezes or device is unresponsive.Software glitch or temporary system error.Perform a soft reset by holding the power button until the device shuts down, then restart. If the problem continues, contact technical support.
Inaccurate readings or inconsistent data.Sensor contamination or device requires recalibration.Ensure the particle inlet and sensor areas are clean. Consider sending the device for recalibration.
Cannot save videos or photos.Internal memory full or microSD card issues.Delete old files from internal memory or insert a new/formatted microSD card. Check if the microSD card is properly inserted.
