Setup

1. Mounting the Controller

  1. Choose a suitable indoor location near a 120V AC outlet, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  2. Use the provided mounting template (if available) or hold the controller against the wall and mark the two mounting holes.
  3. Drill pilot holes and insert the wall anchors if mounting into drywall.
  4. Secure the controller to the wall using the provided screws.

2. Wiring the Valves

Before wiring, ensure the power transformer is unplugged.

  1. Locate the wiring terminal block inside the controller.
  2. Connect one wire from each solenoid valve to its corresponding numbered terminal (1, 2, 3, 4).
  3. Connect the common wire from all solenoid valves to the terminal labeled 'C' (Common).
  4. If your system includes a master valve or pump start relay, connect its wire to the terminal labeled 'MV' (Master Valve).
  5. If using a rain sensor, connect its wires to the 'SEN' terminals. Refer to your rain sensor's manual for specific wiring.

3. Installing Batteries

The controller uses 2 AAA batteries (not included) for non-volatile program memory and programming under battery power.

  1. Open the battery compartment cover, usually located on the back or bottom of the controller.
  2. Insert 2 AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-).
  3. Close the battery compartment cover.

4. Connecting Power

  1. Plug the external 120V AC transformer into a suitable indoor electrical outlet.
  2. Connect the transformer's output wire to the power input terminals on the controller.
  3. The LCD display should illuminate, indicating power is supplied.

Operating the Controller

The ESP-RZX4i features a large LCD display and intuitive buttons for easy navigation and programming.

1. Setting Date and Time

  1. Press the DATE/TIME button.
  2. Use the + and - buttons to adjust the year, month, day, hour, and minute.
  3. Press NEXT to move to the next setting or BACK to go back.
  4. Press AUTO to save and exit.

2. Programming Watering Schedules

The controller allows for up to six start times per day for each zone.

  1. Press the SCHEDULE button.
  2. The display will show the first available start time. Use + and - to set the desired start time. Press NEXT to confirm.
  3. Set the run time for each zone (1-4) using + and -. Press NEXT after each zone.
  4. After setting run times for all zones, you will be prompted to set the watering days.
  5. Choose your watering days:
    • Custom Days: Select specific days of the week (e.g., M, W, F).
    • Odd/Even Days: Water on odd or even calendar days.
    • Cyclic: Water every 'X' days (e.g., every 3 days).
    Use + and - to navigate options and NEXT to confirm.
  6. Press AUTO to save the schedule and return to automatic operation.

3. Manual Operation

To manually water a zone or all zones:

  1. Press the MANUAL button.
  2. Use NEXT to select a specific zone or all zones.
  3. Use + and - to set the desired run time.
  4. The selected zone(s) will begin watering immediately.
  5. To stop manual watering, press the OFF button.

4. Seasonal Adjust

The Seasonal Adjust feature allows you to quickly increase or decrease watering duration for all zones by a percentage.

  1. Press the SEASONAL ADJUST button.
  2. Use + and - to adjust the percentage (e.g., 100% for normal, 50% for half, 150% for more).
  3. Press AUTO to save and exit.

5. Turning the Controller OFF

To stop all automatic watering, press the OFF button. The display will show 'OFF'. To resume automatic watering, press the AUTO button.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

Wipe the controller's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure no moisture enters the internal components.

2. Battery Replacement

Replace the 2 AAA batteries annually or when the low battery indicator appears on the display. This ensures program memory retention during power outages.

3. Winterization

In regions with freezing temperatures, it is crucial to winterize your irrigation system and controller:

  • Disconnect the power transformer from the electrical outlet.
  • Turn off the main water supply to the irrigation system.
  • Drain all water from the irrigation lines and valves to prevent freezing and damage.
  • The controller can remain mounted indoors, but ensure it is not exposed to extreme cold.
