4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Attaching the Lens

  1. Ensure both the camera and lens are powered off.
  2. Remove the rear lens cap from the lens and the body cap from the camera.
  3. Align the red index mark on the lens with the red index mark on the camera's lens mount.
  4. Insert the lens into the camera mount and turn it clockwise until it clicks into place.

4.2 Removing the Lens

  1. Ensure the camera is powered off.
  2. While pressing the lens release button on the camera body, turn the lens counter-clockwise until it stops.
  3. Remove the lens from the camera.
  4. Attach the rear lens cap to the removed lens and the body cap to the camera.

4.3 Attaching/Removing Lens Caps

Always keep the front and rear lens caps attached when the lens is not in use to protect the optical elements from dust, scratches, and impact.

5. Operating the Lens

5.1 Autofocus (AF) / Manual Focus (MF) Switch

The lens features a switch to select between autofocus and manual focus modes. Locate the AF/MF switch on the side of the lens barrel.

  • Set to AF for automatic focusing. The camera will control the focus.
  • Set to MF for manual focusing. You will need to rotate the focus ring to adjust focus.

5.2 Image Stabilizer (IS) Switch

The Optical Image Stabilizer helps reduce blur caused by camera shake. Locate the STABILIZER ON/OFF switch on the side of the lens barrel.

  • Set to ON to activate the Image Stabilizer. This is recommended for handheld shooting, especially in low light.
  • Set to OFF when using a tripod or when the shutter speed is fast enough to prevent blur.

5.3 Zooming

To adjust the focal length, rotate the zoom ring on the lens barrel. The lens allows zooming between 10mm and 18mm.

  • Always complete zooming before focusing to avoid affecting focus accuracy.
  • Rapid rotation of the zoom ring may temporarily cause blurring.
  • Zooming while the camera is off may result in delayed focus when powered on.
  • Avoid zooming during a still image exposure, as this can cause light streaks in the captured image.

5.4 Focusing

The lens utilizes a rear focusing system for efficient autofocus. When the AF/MF switch is set to AF, the camera will automatically focus when the shutter button is half-pressed.

For manual focusing, set the AF/MF switch to MF and rotate the front focus ring until your subject appears sharp in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen. The lens also supports full-time manual focus, allowing fine adjustments even in AF mode by rotating the focus ring after autofocus has been achieved.

6. Care and Maintenance

Proper care and maintenance will extend the life and performance of your lens.

  • Cleaning the Lens: Use a soft, lint-free cloth, preferably a microfiber cloth, to gently wipe dust from the lens surfaces. For stubborn smudges or fingerprints, use a specialized lens cleaning solution applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens. Avoid touching the glass elements with your fingers.
  • Cleaning the Lens Body: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the lens. Do not use organic solvents such as paint thinner or benzene.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the lens with both front and rear caps attached in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Consider using a desiccant to prevent mold growth if storing for extended periods in humid environments.
  • Handling: Avoid exposing the lens to sudden temperature changes, which can cause condensation. Protect the lens from strong shocks or vibrations.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your lens, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Lens not focusing:
    • Ensure the AF/MF switch on the lens is set to AF for autofocus.
    • Check the camera's focus mode settings.
    • Ensure there is sufficient light and contrast for the autofocus system to work effectively.
  • Images appear blurry:
    • Verify that the Image Stabilizer (IS) switch is set to ON if shooting handheld.
    • Check your camera's shutter speed; a faster shutter speed can reduce motion blur.
    • Ensure the lens and camera are securely mounted.
  • Lens not recognized by camera:
    • Ensure the lens is correctly attached to the camera body and has clicked into place.
    • Clean the electrical contacts on both the lens mount and camera body with a clean, dry cloth.
    • Power cycle the camera (turn off, remove battery, reinsert, turn on).
  • Unusual noises from the lens:
    • The STM motor is designed to be quiet, but slight operational sounds during focusing are normal.
    • If the noise is loud or unusual, discontinue use and contact Canon service.

For issues not covered here, please consult the camera's instruction manual or contact Canon customer support.
