Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions during installation and operation:

  • Disconnect the vehicle's battery negative terminal before beginning any electrical work to prevent short circuits.
  • Ensure all wiring is properly insulated and secured to prevent damage from vibration or sharp edges.
  • Do not mount speakers where they may obstruct airbags, driver visibility, or vehicle controls.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, during installation.
  • If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, consult a professional car audio installer.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to high volume levels, which can cause hearing damage.

Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance. It is recommended to have this system installed by a qualified professional.

Woofer Installation

The THUNDER51 woofers are designed for standard 5.25-inch speaker openings. Ensure the mounting location has sufficient depth and clearance.

  • Woofer Mounting Depth: 2.19 inches (5.56 cm)
  • Woofer Cut Out Diameter: 4.69 inches (11.91 cm)

Secure the woofers using appropriate screws and mounting hardware (not included unless specified by your vehicle's requirements).

Tweeter Installation

The 25mm soft dome tweeters offer multi-mount flexibility, including flush or surface mount adaptors. They can swivel within the adaptor for superior imaging.

  • Choose a mounting location that provides optimal sound staging and imaging, typically near the woofers or higher in the vehicle's cabin.
  • Use the provided adaptors for either flush mounting (recessed) or surface mounting (on top of a panel).
  • Once mounted, adjust the tweeter's swivel angle to direct sound towards the listening position.

Crossover Connection

The external crossovers are essential for directing the correct frequency ranges to the woofers and tweeters. Connect your car stereo's speaker outputs to the input terminals of the crossovers. Then, connect the woofer output from the crossover to the 5.25-inch woofer and the tweeter output to the 1-inch tweeter.

  • Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) for all connections. Incorrect polarity can lead to poor sound quality.
  • Mount the crossovers in a dry, secure location, away from excessive heat or moisture.

Operating Instructions

Once properly installed, your MTX THUNDER51 component speakers are ready for use with your car audio system.

  • Power Handling: The speakers are rated for 90 Watts RMS (Root Mean Square) and 180 Watts Peak power per speaker. Ensure your amplifier or head unit's output does not exceed these ratings to prevent damage.
  • Impedance: The speakers have a 4 Ohm impedance. Match this with your amplifier's stable impedance rating.
  • Sound Adjustment: Use your car stereo's equalizer and balance/fader controls to fine-tune the sound to your preference. The multi-mount tweeters allow for directional adjustment to optimize the soundstage.
  • Break-in Period: Allow a short break-in period (typically 10-20 hours of normal listening) for the speaker components to loosen up and achieve their optimal sound performance.

Maintenance

Your MTX THUNDER51 speakers require minimal maintenance to ensure long-lasting performance.

  • Cleaning: Gently wipe the speaker cones and grilles with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Inspection: Periodically check all wiring connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion.
  • Environment: While designed for automotive use, avoid exposing the speakers to excessive moisture or extreme temperatures.
