TELEFUNKEN M80

Telefunken M80 Handheld Dynamic Cardioid Microphone

Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

The Telefunken M80 is a high-performance handheld dynamic microphone designed for a wide range of applications, including live vocals, instruments, and studio recordings. It features a wider frequency response and higher Sound Pressure Level (SPL) capabilities compared to many traditional dynamic microphones, delivering a sound quality often associated with condenser microphones.

Its rugged construction ensures durability for both stage and studio environments. The M80's low mass capsule and super-thin membrane contribute to its ability to capture vocal nuances with clarity, while its design minimizes proximity effect, providing clear low-end without sacrificing presence.

2. Safety Information

  • Handle with Care: Avoid dropping or subjecting the microphone to severe impacts, as this can damage internal components.
  • Moisture Protection: Do not expose the microphone to water or excessive moisture. This can lead to electrical shock or damage to the microphone.
  • Temperature: Operate and store the microphone within normal room temperatures. Extreme temperatures can affect performance and longevity.
  • Cleaning: Refer to the Maintenance section for proper cleaning procedures. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Unauthorized Modifications: Do not attempt to open or modify the microphone. This will void the warranty and may cause damage.

4. Setup

4.1. Connecting the Microphone

  1. Locate the XLR connector at the base of the M80 microphone.
  2. Connect a standard 3-pin XLR cable to the microphone's connector. Ensure a secure connection.
  3. Connect the other end of the XLR cable to an input on your audio mixer, audio interface, or preamplifier.

4.2. Mounting on a Stand

  1. Attach the included microphone clip to a standard microphone stand.
  2. Carefully insert the Telefunken M80 microphone into the clip, ensuring it is held firmly.
  3. Adjust the microphone stand and clip to the desired height and angle for optimal sound capture.

4.3. Power Source

The Telefunken M80 is a dynamic microphone and does not require phantom power. It operates as a corded electric device, drawing power from the connected audio equipment's input impedance.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Microphone Placement

The M80 features a unidirectional (cardioid) polar pattern, meaning it is most sensitive to sound coming from the front and rejects sound from the sides and rear. This helps to minimize feedback in live settings and isolate the desired sound source in the studio.

  • Vocals: For optimal vocal performance, position the microphone 2-6 inches from the mouth. Experiment with distance to achieve the desired balance of clarity and warmth.
  • Instruments: When miking instruments, aim the microphone directly at the sound source. For guitar amplifiers, try positioning it near the center of the speaker cone for a brighter sound, or towards the edge for a warmer tone.
  • Off-Axis Rejection: Utilize the microphone's unidirectional pattern by positioning unwanted sound sources (e.g., other instruments, stage monitors) to the sides or rear of the microphone.

5.2. Gain Staging

Set the input gain on your mixer or interface to an appropriate level. The M80 has a high output, so start with lower gain settings and gradually increase until a strong, clear signal is achieved without clipping (distortion).

6. Maintenance

6.1. Cleaning

  • Microphone Body: Wipe the microphone body with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. For stubborn marks, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed immediately by a dry cloth.
  • Grille: The microphone grille can be gently cleaned with a soft brush to remove any debris. For hygienic purposes, the grille can often be unscrewed and cleaned separately with mild soap and water, then thoroughly dried before reattaching. Consult the manufacturer's website for specific instructions on grille removal for your model.

6.2. Storage

When not in use, store the Telefunken M80 in its provided leather carrying bag to protect it from dust, moisture, and physical damage. Store in a cool, dry place.

7. Troubleshooting

7.1. No Sound Output

  • Check Connections: Ensure all XLR cables are securely connected at both the microphone and the audio mixer/interface.
  • Mixer/Interface Settings: Verify that the correct input channel is selected, the gain knob is turned up, and the channel fader is raised. Check if any mute buttons are engaged.
  • Cable Integrity: Test with a different XLR cable to rule out a faulty cable.

7.2. Distorted Sound

  • Input Gain Too High: Reduce the input gain on your mixer/interface. The M80 has a high output, so excessive gain can cause clipping.
  • Proximity Effect: If the sound is too boomy or muddy, try increasing the distance between the sound source and the microphone.
  • Output Levels: Check the output levels of your mixer/interface to ensure they are not overdriving subsequent equipment.
