1. Introduction

The CONTEC SP10 Diagnostic Spirometer is a portable device designed for measuring respiratory function. It is suitable for use in hospitals, clinics, and for home health care. This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation, setup, and maintenance of your SP10 spirometer.

2. Safety Information

  • Consult a medical professional for interpretation of results. This device is for diagnostic purposes and should not replace professional medical advice.
  • Keep the device dry and away from extreme temperatures.
  • Use only the specified power adapter and batteries.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the device yourself. Refer to qualified service personnel.
  • Ensure proper hygiene when using the mouthpiece. Use disposable mouthpieces for each patient to prevent cross-contamination.

4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the SP10 unit.
  2. Open the compartment cover.
  3. Insert one 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

4.2 Software Installation

  1. Insert the provided software CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the PC software.
  3. If the auto-run feature does not start, navigate to the CD drive and run the setup file manually.

4.3 Connecting to PC

  1. Ensure the spirometer is powered off.
  2. Connect one end of the USB data cable to the USB port on the SP10 unit.
  3. Connect the other end of the USB data cable to an available USB port on your computer.
  4. The device should be recognized by the installed PC software.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Powering On/Off

  • To power on, press the power button located on the device.
  • The device will automatically shut down if not operated for one minute to conserve battery life.
  • To manually power off, press and hold the power button until the screen turns off.

5.2 Performing a Measurement

  1. Ensure a clean, disposable mouthpiece is attached to the spirometer.
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts for patient preparation and breathing instructions.
  3. The device measures parameters such as:
    • FVC (Forced Vital Capacity)
    • FEV1 (Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second)
    • FEV1% (FEV1/FVC ratio)
    • PEF (Peak Expiratory Flow)
    • FEF25 (25% flow of FVC)
    • FEF75 (75% of FVC)
    • FEF2575 (Mean flow between 25% and 75% of FVC)
  4. The device will display the measured values and compare them to expected values, showing the ratio.

5.3 Display Interpretation

  • The color screen displays flow-volume and volume-time curves.
  • Trend curves are shown to monitor changes over time.
  • The device provides information when measured volume or flow values exceed predefined limits.

6. Data Management

6.1 Memory Functions

The SP10 spirometer has internal memory to store measurement data. Refer to the on-screen menu for options to save, erase, or review stored data directly on the device.

6.2 Uploading Data to PC

Once connected to a PC (refer to Section 4.3), use the installed PC software to upload stored data from the spirometer. The software allows for detailed analysis, reporting, and long-term data storage.

6.3 Reviewing Data

Data can be reviewed on the device's screen or more comprehensively through the PC software. The software provides graphical representations and detailed reports of all measured parameters.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

  • Wipe the exterior of the device with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the device in liquid.
  • Ensure the mouthpiece is replaced with a new, disposable one for each use to maintain hygiene.

7.2 Storage

Store the spirometer in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for an extended period, remove the battery.

7.3 Battery Replacement

Replace the 9V battery when the low battery indicator appears on the screen or if the device fails to power on. Refer to Section 4.1 for battery installation instructions.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Device does not power on: Check battery installation and charge level. Replace battery if necessary.
  • No data transfer to PC: Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the device and the computer. Verify that the PC software is correctly installed and running.
  • Inaccurate readings: Ensure the mouthpiece is correctly attached and that the patient is performing the breathing maneuver as instructed. Check for any obstructions in the airflow path.
