Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V digital camera. The DSC-HX400V is a compact digital camera featuring a powerful 50x optical zoom lens, a 20.4MP Exmor R CMOS sensor, and advanced imaging technologies for high-quality photos and Full HD videos.

2. Charging the Battery

Insert the supplied NP-BX1 battery pack into the camera. Connect the camera to the AC adapter using the Micro USB cable, then plug the AC adapter into a wall outlet. The charge lamp will illuminate during charging and turn off when charging is complete. A full charge typically takes approximately 150 minutes.

3. Inserting a Memory Card

Open the memory card/battery cover on the side of the camera. Insert a compatible SD/SDHC/SDXC or Memory Stick Pro Duo/Pro-HG Duo card into the slot with the correct orientation until it clicks into place. Close the cover securely.

4. Attaching the Shoulder Strap and Lens Cap

Attach the shoulder strap to the camera's strap lugs for secure carrying. Place the lens cap on the lens when the camera is not in use to protect the lens surface.

Operating the Camera

1. Power On/Off

Press the ON/OFF button located on the top of the camera to power it on or off.

2. Basic Shooting

Rotate the mode dial to select your desired shooting mode (e.g., Program Auto, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, Manual, Intelligent Auto, Scene Selection). Frame your shot using the LCD screen or electronic viewfinder. Press the shutter button halfway to focus, then press fully to capture the image.

3. Zoom Function

Use the zoom lever around the shutter button to adjust the optical zoom (50x). The camera also features 100x Clear Image Zoom, which digitally enhances the optical zoom range while maintaining image quality.

4. Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization

The camera is equipped with Optical SteadyShot (Intelligent Active mode) to minimize blur in both still images and videos, especially when shooting handheld or at high zoom levels.

5. Focusing (Lock-On AF)

The Lock-On AF feature allows the camera to maintain focus on a moving subject by recognizing its patterns and adjusting focus across multiple points.

6. Recording Videos

To record video, press the dedicated MOVIE button. The camera supports Full HD 1080/60p/24p AVCHD video recording. Press the button again to stop recording.

7. Tilting LCD Screen

The 3.0-inch LCD screen can be tilted for easier viewing from various angles, useful for high or low-angle shots.

8. Wi-Fi and NFC Connectivity

The camera supports Wi-Fi and NFC for easy connection to smartphones and tablets. Use NFC for one-touch connection with compatible Android devices to transfer images or use Smart Remote Control for shutter release.

9. GPS Tagged Photos

The built-in GPS function records location data with your photos and videos, allowing you to track your photographic journey and view images on a map using compatible software like PlayMemories Home or Google Earth.

10. PlayMemories Camera Apps

Enhance your camera's functionality by downloading PlayMemories Camera Apps. These apps offer creative effects, retouching tools, and features like Time Lapse and Direct Upload.

11. 4K Still Image Output

Connect the camera via HDMI to a compatible 4K TV to view your still images in 4K resolution (four times the resolution of Full HD).

Maintenance

1. Cleaning the Camera Body

Wipe the camera body with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a cloth lightly dampened with water or a mild detergent, then wipe dry.

2. Cleaning the Lens and Screen

Use a lens blower to remove dust from the lens surface. For smudges, gently wipe with a lens cleaning cloth. Avoid touching the lens directly with your fingers. Clean the LCD screen with a soft, dry cloth.

3. Battery Care

Store the battery in a cool, dry place when not in use. Avoid exposing the battery to extreme temperatures. If the camera will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery.

Troubleshooting

  • Camera does not power on: Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly inserted.
  • Images are blurry: Check if Optical SteadyShot is enabled. Ensure sufficient lighting. Use a tripod for telephoto shots.
  • Cannot connect to smartphone via Wi-Fi/NFC: Ensure Wi-Fi and NFC are enabled on both the camera and the smartphone. For NFC, ensure the devices are touched correctly. Refer to your smartphone's manual for compatibility.
  • Memory card error: Ensure the memory card is inserted correctly and is not damaged. Try formatting the card (this will erase all data).
  • Short battery life: Battery life can vary based on usage (e.g., frequent zooming, flash use, video recording). Ensure the battery is fully charged. Consider carrying a spare battery.
