Setup

  1. Attaching to a Fishing Rod: Securely attach the reel to the reel seat on your fishing rod. Ensure the reel foot is firmly seated and the locking mechanism is tightened to prevent movement during casting and retrieval.
  2. Spooling Fishing Line:
    • Open the bail arm.
    • Tie the fishing line to the reel spool using an arbor knot or similar secure knot.
    • Close the bail arm.
    • Begin winding the line onto the spool, maintaining slight tension on the line to ensure even and tight winding. Avoid overfilling the spool; leave a small gap from the spool lip.
    • The reel has a capacity of 220m of 0.35mm line.
  3. Adjusting Drag: The drag system controls the amount of resistance the line experiences when a fish pulls on it. Turn the drag knob on the front of the spool clockwise to increase drag and counter-clockwise to decrease it. Set the drag to approximately one-third of your line's breaking strength.

Operating Instructions

  1. Casting:
    • Hold the rod and reel comfortably.
    • Open the bail arm.
    • Hold the line against the rod with your index finger.
    • Swing the rod forward, releasing your finger from the line at the peak of the forward motion to allow the lure or bait to fly.
    • Close the bail arm manually or by turning the handle once the lure hits the water.
  2. Retrieving: Turn the reel handle clockwise to retrieve the line. Maintain a steady retrieve speed appropriate for your lure or bait.
  3. Fighting a Fish: When a fish bites, set the hook by lifting the rod tip sharply. Use the drag system to allow the fish to take line when it pulls hard, preventing line breakage. Pump the rod by lifting it and then reeling down to gain line.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance extends the life and performance of your Caperlan Sea-50-Reel.

  • Rinsing After Use: After every use, especially in saltwater environments, rinse the reel thoroughly with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel. Gently spray or wipe down the exterior to remove salt, sand, and debris.
  • Drying: Allow the reel to air dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area before storing. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of reel oil to moving parts such as the handle knob, bail arm pivot, and main shaft. Use reel grease on gears if disassembling for deeper cleaning (recommended only for experienced users).
  • Storage: Store the reel in a dry, cool place, away from extreme temperatures and humidity. Consider using a reel cover or bag to protect it from dust and scratches.
