Ubiquiti Networks MFI-DS

Ubiquiti Networks MFi Door Sensor (MFI-DS) User Manual

Model: MFI-DS

1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the Ubiquiti Networks MFi Door Sensor (MFI-DS). The MFI-DS is a magnetic switch sensor designed to detect the open/closed status of doors or windows within the Ubiquiti mFi ecosystem.

The mFi hardware is managed and monitored using the mFi Controller software, which allows for the creation of rules based on sensor data.

2. Package Contents

Verify that the following items are included in your package:

  • Ubiquiti Networks MFi Door Sensor (MFI-DS) - Main unit and magnetic contact
  • Connecting Wire (typically 22AWG, white)
  • Mounting Screws (if applicable, not explicitly mentioned but implied for installation)

3. Setup and Installation

3.1. Requirements

  • Ubiquiti mFi Controller software installed and running.
  • Ubiquiti mFi device (e.g., mPort) with available terminal block connector.
  • Basic wiring tools (wire strippers, small screwdriver).

3.2. Physical Installation

  1. Identify Mounting Location: Choose a location on the door/window frame and the moving part (door/window) where the two sensor components can be mounted in close proximity when the door/window is closed. Ensure they are aligned.
  2. Mount Sensor Components: Securely attach the two parts of the MFI-DS sensor using screws or adhesive (if provided) to the chosen surfaces. The magnetic part should align with the switch part.
  3. Wire Connection:
    • The MFI-DS connects to the mPort (or similar mFi device) using a terminal block connector.
    • Strip a small amount of insulation from the ends of the connecting wire.
    • Connect one end of the wire to the terminal block on the MFI-DS sensor.
    • Connect the other end of the wire to an available terminal block input on your mFi device. Refer to your mFi device's manual for specific terminal block pinouts.
  4. Secure Wiring: Ensure all wire connections are secure and that the wiring is routed safely to prevent damage.

3.3. Software Configuration (mFi Controller)

After physical installation, configure the sensor within the mFi Controller software:

  1. Launch mFi Controller: Open your Ubiquiti mFi Controller software.
  2. Discover Device: Ensure your mFi device (e.g., mPort) is discovered and adopted by the controller.
  3. Identify Sensor: The MFI-DS sensor should appear as a connected input on the mFi device within the controller interface.
  4. Configure Sensor:
    • Assign a descriptive name to the sensor (e.g., "Front Door Sensor").
    • Configure its type as a "Door Sensor" or "Contact Sensor" if options are available.
    • Verify its status changes (Open/Closed) in the controller when the door/window is opened and closed.
  5. Create Rules: Utilize the mFi Controller's rule engine to define actions based on the sensor's status. For example, send an alert when the door opens, or trigger another mFi device.

4. Operation

The MFI-DS operates as a simple magnetic switch. When the two parts of the sensor are in close proximity (door/window closed), the circuit is complete. When they are separated (door/window open), the circuit is broken.

The mFi Controller software continuously monitors the state of the MFI-DS. You can view the current status of the sensor through the controller's dashboard or device list. Any rules configured in the controller will execute automatically based on the sensor's state changes.

5. Maintenance

The Ubiquiti MFI-DS Door Sensor requires minimal maintenance.

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the sensor components with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust or dirt. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the sensor for any physical damage or loose wiring. Ensure the two sensor parts remain properly aligned.
  • Software Updates: Keep your mFi Controller software updated to the latest version to ensure optimal performance and compatibility with all mFi devices.

6. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Sensor not detected by mFi Controller.
  • Incorrect wiring to mFi device.
  • Faulty wire connection.
  • mFi device not powered or adopted.
  • Verify wiring connections at both the sensor and the mFi device.
  • Ensure the mFi device is powered on and adopted by the controller.
  • Test the wire for continuity if possible.
Sensor status not changing (always Open/Closed).
  • Sensor components misaligned.
  • Gap between sensor components too large.
  • Damaged sensor or wiring.
  • Realign the sensor components to ensure they are in close proximity when the door/window is closed.
  • Reduce the gap between the magnetic and switch parts.
  • Inspect the sensor and wiring for visible damage. Replace if necessary.
Rules not triggering in mFi Controller.
  • Incorrect rule configuration.
  • Sensor not reporting status correctly.
  • Review and edit the rule configuration in the mFi Controller.
  • Verify the sensor's status is accurately reflected in the controller interface.
