4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the SM208 meter.
  2. Open the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert one 9V layer-built battery, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

4.2 Connecting the Light Probe

  1. Identify the connector port on the top of the SM208 meter unit.
  2. Align the connector of the external light probe with the port.
  3. Gently push the probe connector into the port until it is firmly seated. Do not force the connection.

5. Operation

5.1 Powering On/Off

  • To power on the device, press the POWER button. The display will illuminate.
  • To power off the device, press and hold the POWER button until the display turns off.

5.2 Selecting Measurement Range

The SM208 offers multiple measurement ranges to accommodate different luminance levels. Use the RANGE buttons to select the appropriate range:

  • 39.99 cd/m²: For very low luminance measurements.
  • 399.9 cd/m²: For low to medium luminance measurements.
  • 3999 cd/m²: For medium to high luminance measurements.
  • 39990 cd/m²: For high luminance measurements.

Always select a range that is higher than the expected measurement to avoid over-range indications.

5.3 Taking Measurements

  1. Ensure the light probe is securely connected.
  2. Power on the meter.
  3. Select an appropriate measurement range using the RANGE buttons.
  4. Position the light probe directly against the screen or surface to be measured. Ensure the probe's sensor is fully exposed to the light source.
  5. Read the luminance value displayed on the screen in cd/m².

5.4 HOLD Function

Press the HOLD button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press it again to release the hold and resume live measurements.

5.5 PEAK Function

Press the PEAK button to capture and display the maximum luminance value detected during a measurement session. Press it again to exit peak hold mode.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

To clean the meter and probe, use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these may damage the device's surface or sensor. Keep the light sensor clean and free from dust or smudges for accurate readings.

6.2 Battery Replacement

When the battery indicator appears on the display, replace the 9V battery as described in Section 4.1. Remove the battery if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.

6.3 Storage

Store the SM208 meter in its protective carrying case in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid storing in environments with high humidity or corrosive gases.

7. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Meter does not power on. Dead or incorrectly installed battery. Check battery polarity. Replace with a new 9V battery.
Inaccurate or fluctuating readings.
  • Incorrect range selected.
  • Dirty sensor.
  • Probe not properly connected.
  • External light interference.
  • Select a higher measurement range.
  • Clean the light sensor with a soft cloth.
  • Ensure the probe is firmly connected.
  • Perform measurements in a controlled lighting environment.
Meter shows "OL" or over-range. Luminance exceeds the selected range. Switch to a higher measurement range (e.g., 39990 cd/m²).
Display is dim or flickering. Low battery power. Replace the 9V battery.
