3. Setup Instructions
Follow these steps to properly install your ASUS H81M-K motherboard and its components.
3.1 Pre-installation Checks
- Ensure your computer case is compatible with Micro ATX motherboards.
- Gather all necessary components: CPU, CPU cooler, DDR3 RAM modules, power supply, storage devices, and any expansion cards.
- Discharge static electricity by touching a grounded metal object before handling components.
3.2 CPU Installation (LGA 1150)
- Locate the LGA 1150 CPU socket on the motherboard.
- Gently push down the load lever and pull it to the side to open the CPU socket cover.
- Align the triangular mark on your Intel LGA 1150 CPU with the corresponding mark on the socket. Carefully place the CPU into the socket without forcing it.
- Close the socket cover and push the load lever back into its locked position. The cover will pop off automatically.
- Install the CPU cooler according to its manufacturer's instructions.
3.3 RAM Installation
- Locate the two DDR3 DIMM slots (yellow) on the motherboard.
- Open the clips at both ends of the DIMM slot.
- Align the notch on the DDR3 memory module with the key in the DIMM slot.
- Insert the memory module firmly into the slot until the clips snap into place. Ensure both clips are fully closed.
3.4 Motherboard Mounting
- Install the I/O shield into the rear opening of your computer case.
- Carefully place the motherboard into the case, aligning the screw holes with the standoffs.
- Secure the motherboard with screws, ensuring it is firmly seated but not overtightened.
3.5 Connecting Power
- Connect the 24-pin ATX main power connector (EATXPWR) from your power supply to the corresponding slot on the motherboard.
- Connect the 8-pin ATX 12V power connector (ATX12V) to its designated slot near the CPU socket.
3.6 Connecting Storage Devices
- Connect your SATA storage devices (HDDs, SSDs) to the SATA 6Gb/s (yellow) or SATA 3Gb/s (black) ports on the motherboard using SATA data cables.
- Ensure your storage devices are also connected to the power supply.
3.7 Connecting Front Panel Headers
- Connect the front panel USB 3.0, USB 2.0, audio, power switch, reset switch, and LED cables from your case to the corresponding headers on the motherboard. Refer to the motherboard diagram for exact locations.
3.8 Installing Expansion Cards
- Insert your graphics card into the PCI-Express x16 slot.
- Install any other expansion cards (e.g., network cards, sound cards) into the PCI-Express x1 slots.
- Secure all expansion cards with screws to the case.
4. Operating Instructions
After completing the hardware installation, proceed with the initial system setup.
4.1 First Boot
- Connect your monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the appropriate ports on the rear I/O panel.

6. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter.
6.1 No Power
- Verify that the power supply is connected to the motherboard (24-pin EATXPWR and 8-pin ATX12V) and plugged into a working power outlet.
- Ensure the power supply switch is in the 'ON' position.
- Check the front panel power switch connection to the motherboard.
6.2 No Display
- Ensure the monitor is connected to the correct video output (VGA or DVI on the motherboard, or your discrete graphics card).
- Verify that the RAM modules are correctly seated in their slots. Try reseating them or testing with one module at a time.
- If using a discrete graphics card, ensure it is properly seated in the PCIe x16 slot and has adequate power connected.
- Clear the CMOS by removing the CMOS battery for a few seconds (with the system unplugged) or using the CLRTC jumper if available.
6.3 System Instability or Crashes
- Check CPU and GPU temperatures to ensure they are within safe operating limits.
- Verify that all drivers are installed correctly and are up to date.
- Run memory diagnostic tools to check for faulty RAM modules.
- Ensure the power supply provides sufficient and stable power to all components.
