Supco Q103

Supco Q103 Sequencer Instruction Manual

Model: Q103

1. Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the Supco Q103 Sequencer. The Supco Q103 is an essential electrical component designed to control the sequential activation and deactivation of heating elements and blower motors in various HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems, primarily electric furnaces. Adhering to the guidelines in this manual will ensure safe and efficient operation of your heating system.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: Electrical shock hazard. Installation and servicing of this product should only be performed by a qualified HVAC technician. Failure to follow these instructions could result in serious injury or death.

  • Always disconnect all power to the heating system at the main circuit breaker or fuse box before installing, servicing, or removing the sequencer.
  • Verify that the replacement sequencer specifications match the original unit or are compatible with your system's requirements.
  • Ensure all wiring connections are secure and correctly matched to prevent electrical shorts or malfunctions.
  • Do not bypass any safety devices or modify the sequencer.

3. Product Overview

The Supco Q103 is a double-stack sequencer, a critical control component in electric heating systems. Its primary function is to manage the timed activation and deactivation of heating elements and the system's blower motor, ensuring a smooth and controlled heating cycle. This sequential operation prevents sudden power surges and helps maintain system efficiency and longevity.

Visible markings include '15SH2', 'H24V', '309870', 'A1902A', and 'H1-20 C40-110', indicating its type, voltage, part number, and timing specifications.

4. Installation (Setup)

Follow these steps for proper installation of the Supco Q103 Sequencer:

  1. Power Disconnection: Locate the main power supply to your HVAC system and turn it off at the circuit breaker or fuse box. Confirm power is off using a voltage tester.
  2. Access: Open the access panel to your furnace or air handler to expose the existing sequencer.
  3. Wiring Documentation: Before disconnecting any wires, carefully label each wire connected to the old sequencer. Take a photograph of the wiring configuration for reference.
  4. Old Sequencer Removal: Disconnect all wires from the old sequencer. Remove any mounting screws or clips securing the old unit and carefully remove it from the system.
  5. New Sequencer Placement: Position the Supco Q103 Sequencer in the same location as the old unit. Secure it using the appropriate mounting hardware.
  6. Wiring Connection: Connect the labeled wires to the corresponding terminals on the new Q103 sequencer. Refer to your system's wiring diagram and the labels you created. Ensure connections are tight and secure. Common terminal markings on the Q103 include:
    • H1, H2: Heating element terminals.
    • C1, C2: Blower motor terminals.
    • 24V: Low voltage control input.
  7. Panel Closure: Once all connections are verified, close and secure the access panel.
  8. Power Restoration: Restore power to the HVAC system at the main circuit breaker.
  9. System Test: Initiate a heating cycle to confirm proper operation of the sequencer, heating elements, and blower motor.

5. Operation

The Supco Q103 Sequencer operates based on specific timing delays to ensure efficient and safe heating. When the thermostat calls for heat, the sequencer receives a low-voltage signal (typically 24V AC). It then initiates a timed sequence:

  • Heat-On Delay (H1-20): After receiving the call for heat, the sequencer delays for approximately 20 seconds before activating the heating elements. This allows the system to prepare and prevents immediate activation.
  • Blower-On Delay (C40): Once the heating elements are active and have generated sufficient heat, the sequencer delays for approximately 40 seconds before activating the blower motor. This ensures that only warm air is circulated into the living space.
  • Blower-Off Delay (C110): When the thermostat is satisfied and the call for heat ends, the heating elements are deactivated. The blower motor, however, continues to run for approximately 110 seconds (1 minute and 50 seconds) to extract any residual heat from the heating elements, improving efficiency and preventing overheating.

These timings (H1-20 C40-110) are indicative and may vary slightly based on manufacturing tolerances and specific system conditions.

6. Maintenance

The Supco Q103 Sequencer is a sealed unit and contains no user-serviceable parts. Regular maintenance of the sequencer itself is not required beyond ensuring its electrical connections remain clean and tight. For optimal performance and safety of your HVAC system, it is recommended to have a qualified technician perform annual inspections and maintenance on your entire heating system, which includes checking the sequencer's functionality.

7. Troubleshooting

If your heating system is not operating correctly, the sequencer may be a contributing factor. Here are some common issues and potential causes:

  • Heating elements not turning on: This could indicate a faulty sequencer, a problem with the thermostat, or a wiring issue.
  • Blower motor not turning on after heating elements: A common symptom of a failed sequencer or incorrect wiring to the blower terminals.
  • Blower motor running continuously: The sequencer may be stuck in the 'on' position for the blower, or there could be a short in the control circuit.
  • Heating elements and blower turn on simultaneously: This indicates the sequencing function is not working, likely due to a faulty sequencer or incorrect wiring.

Important: Due to the electrical nature of this component and the complexity of HVAC systems, it is strongly recommended to contact a qualified HVAC technician for diagnosis and repair if you suspect a sequencer malfunction. Attempting repairs without proper knowledge and tools can be dangerous and may void product warranties.
