3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully remove the engine from its packaging. Inspect for any signs of shipping damage. Report any damage to your dealer immediately. Ensure all components listed in the packing list (if provided) are present.

3.2 Mounting the Engine

Mount the engine securely to a stable, level surface using appropriate hardware. Ensure the mounting bolts are tightened to the manufacturer's specifications for your equipment. The engine features a 3/4-inch diameter crankshaft for connection to your application's drive system.

3.3 Adding Engine Oil

The engine is shipped without oil. You MUST add engine oil before starting. Refer to the specifications section for recommended oil types and capacities.

  1. Place the engine on a level surface.
  2. Locate the oil fill cap/dipstick.
  3. Remove the cap/dipstick and slowly add the recommended oil (e.g., 10W-30) until the oil level reaches the FULL mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill.
  4. Securely replace the oil fill cap/dipstick.

3.4 Adding Fuel

Use clean, fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher. Do not use E85 gasoline or gasoline containing more than 10% ethanol (E10). Always refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine off and cool.

  1. Ensure the engine is off and cool.
  2. Remove the fuel cap.
  3. Fill the fuel tank slowly, leaving some space for expansion. Do not overfill.
  4. Securely replace the fuel cap.

4. Operating the Engine

4.1 Starting Procedure

  1. Ensure the engine is on a level surface.
  2. Move the throttle control to the FAST position.
  3. Move the choke control to the FULL CHOKE position (for cold starts). For warm starts, the choke may not be necessary.
  4. Turn the engine ON/OFF switch to the ON position.
  5. Pull the starter rope slowly until resistance is felt, then pull quickly and firmly. Repeat if necessary until the engine starts.
  6. Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke control to the OFF position as the engine warms up.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of your Briggs & Stratton engine. Always perform maintenance with the engine off and cool, and disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting.

5.1 Engine Oil

Initial Oil Change: Change the engine oil after the first 5-10 hours of operation to remove any break-in contaminants.

Regular Oil Change: Change the oil every 50 hours of operation or annually, whichever comes first. Use Briggs & Stratton SAE 30W oil for temperatures above 40°F (4°C) or SAE 10W-30 for varying temperatures. Note that 30W oil may cause hard starting below 40°F.

5.2 Air Filter

This engine features a premium Dual Clean air filtration system. Inspect the air filter regularly (every 25 hours or seasonally) and clean or replace as needed. A dirty air filter can reduce engine performance and life.
