4. Setup Instructions
Follow these steps to set up your TP-Link Powerline Wi-Fi Extender kit:
4.1 Initial Placement
- Connect the TL-PA4010: Plug the TL-PA4010 adapter directly into a wall power outlet near your internet router. Do not use power strips or extension cords, as they can interfere with powerline performance.
- Connect to Router: Use the provided Ethernet cable to connect the TL-PA4010 to an available LAN port on your router.
- Connect TL-WPA4220 Extenders: Plug the two TL-WPA4220 extender units directly into wall power outlets in the rooms where you need extended Wi-Fi or wired network access. Ensure they are on the same electrical circuit as the TL-PA4010 for optimal performance.

4.2 Pairing the Devices
To establish a secure powerline network, you need to pair the adapters:
- Press the Pair button on the TL-PA4010 adapter for one second. The Power LED will start blinking.
- Within two minutes, press the Pair button on one of the TL-WPA4220 extenders for one second. The Power LED will start blinking.
- Wait for the Powerline (PLC) LED on both devices to turn solid green, indicating a successful connection.
- Repeat step 2 and 3 for the second TL-WPA4220 extender.

4.3 Wi-Fi Clone (Optional)
To unify your Wi-Fi network, you can clone your router's Wi-Fi settings to the TL-WPA4220 extenders:
- Ensure the TL-WPA4220 extender is paired with the TL-PA4010.
- Press the Wi-Fi Clone button on the TL-WPA4220 extender for one second. The Wi-Fi LED will start blinking.
- Within two minutes, press the WPS button on your main router.
- Wait for the Wi-Fi LED on the TL-WPA4220 to turn solid, indicating successful cloning. The extender will now broadcast your router's Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password.
- Repeat for the second TL-WPA4220 extender.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 LED Indicators
Understanding the LED status helps monitor the device's operation:
- Power (PWR) LED:
- Solid Green: Device is powered on.
- Off: Device is powered off.
- Powerline (PLC) LED:
- Solid Green: Connected to a powerline network.
- Blinking: Pairing in progress.
- Off: Not connected to a powerline network.
- Ethernet (ETH) LED:
- Solid Green: An Ethernet device is connected.
- Blinking: Data is being transmitted/received via the Ethernet port.
- Off: No Ethernet device is connected.
- Wi-Fi/Wi-Fi Clone LED (TL-WPA4220 only):
- Solid Green: Wi-Fi is enabled.
- Blinking: Wi-Fi Clone in progress.
- Off: Wi-Fi is disabled.
5.2 Connecting Devices
Once the powerline network is established, you can connect your devices:
- Wired Connection: Use an Ethernet cable to connect your computer, smart TV, game console, or other network devices to the Ethernet ports on the TL-WPA4220 extenders.
- Wireless Connection: Connect your Wi-Fi enabled devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops) to the Wi-Fi network broadcast by the TL-WPA4220 extenders. If you used the Wi-Fi Clone function, the network name and password will be the same as your main router. Otherwise, refer to the label on the extender for the default Wi-Fi name and password.
6. Maintenance
To ensure optimal performance and longevity of your powerline adapters, consider the following maintenance tips:
- Direct Wall Outlet: Always plug the powerline adapters directly into a wall power outlet. Avoid power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords, as they can degrade performance or block the powerline signal.
- Cleanliness: Keep the devices clean and free from dust. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
- Ventilation: Ensure the adapters have adequate ventilation. Do not cover them or place them in enclosed spaces.
- Firmware Updates: Periodically check the TP-Link official website for firmware updates to ensure the best performance and security.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your powerline network, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
7.1 No Powerline Connection (PLC LED is Off)
- Check Power: Ensure all powerline adapters are plugged into live wall outlets.
- Direct Connection: Confirm that no power strips, extension cords, or surge protectors are being used between the adapters and the wall outlets.
- Electrical Circuit: Verify that all powerline adapters are on the same electrical circuit. Powerline devices may not work across different electrical phases or circuits.
- Re-pair Devices: Try pairing the devices again as described in Section 4.2.
- Interference: Large power-consuming appliances (e.g., washing machines, refrigerators) plugged into nearby outlets can cause interference. Try plugging the adapter into a different outlet.
7.2 Slow Powerline Speed
- Direct Connection: Ensure adapters are plugged directly into wall outlets.
- Distance: While powerline works over 300 meters, longer distances or older/poor quality wiring can reduce speed.
- Electrical Noise: Other electrical devices can generate noise on the powerline. Try unplugging other devices temporarily to identify the source of interference.
- Circuit Load: High electrical load on the circuit can affect performance.
7.3 Wi-Fi Issues (TL-WPA4220)
- Wi-Fi LED: Check if the Wi-Fi LED is solid green. If not, press the Wi-Fi/Wi-Fi Clone button to enable Wi-Fi.
- Wi-Fi Clone: If you used Wi-Fi Clone, ensure the process was successful. If not, repeat the steps in Section 4.3.
- Default SSID/Password: If Wi-Fi Clone was not used, connect to the default Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and use the password printed on the device label.
- Interference: Other Wi-Fi networks or devices can cause interference. Try changing the Wi-Fi channel via the web management interface if necessary.
