Standalone Copier & Eraser/Sanitizer for Multiple SATA 3.5" Disk & 2.5" Solid State Drives

Model: SYS105HS-DP | Brand: Systor

1. Introduction

The Systor SYS105HS-DP is a high-performance, standalone 1:5 HDD/SSD Hard Drive Duplicator designed for efficient and secure data copying and sanitization. This device supports both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA hard drives and solid-state drives without the need for additional adapters. It operates independently, requiring no computer or software connection, making it a versatile tool for data management.

Key features include:

  • Complete Standalone Operation: No computer or software is required for any function.
  • Broad Compatibility: Supports both 3.5" and 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD drives.
  • High Transfer Rate: Copies multiple drives simultaneously at speeds up to 90MB per second (5.4GB per minute).
  • Duplication & Sanitization: Capable of copying entire drives or specific data, and performing secure data erasure compliant with DoD 5220.22-M standards.

2. Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety instructions before operating the device to prevent injury or damage. Keep this manual for future reference.

  • Ensure the device is placed on a stable, level surface.
  • Do not expose the device to water, moisture, or extreme temperatures.
  • Use only the provided power cable.
  • Do not open the device casing. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Always handle hard drives carefully to avoid damage to the drives or the duplicator's connectors.
  • Do not turn off the duplicator while it is actively copying, testing, or erasing data. This can lead to data corruption or device malfunction.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all items are present in the package:

4. Setup and Drive Installation

This section guides you through the initial setup and proper installation of hard drives into the duplicator.

4.1 Identifying Drive Slots

The duplicator features one Source (Master) slot and multiple Target slots. For the SYS105HS-DP, there is 1 Source slot and 5 Target slots.

4.2 Inserting Drives

The duplicator accommodates both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA hard drives and solid-state drives directly into the bays without adapters.

  • Source Drive: Insert the drive containing the data you wish to copy into the designated Source Slot (Master), typically the topmost bay.
  • Target Drives: Insert the blank or erasable drives into the Target Slots. Ensure the target drives have equal or greater capacity than the source drive for successful duplication.
  • Gently slide each drive into its respective bay until it clicks into place. Do not force drives, as this may damage the SATA connectors.

4.3 Powering On

Connect the power cable to the duplicator and a power outlet. Press the power button, usually located on the front or rear of the unit. The LCD display will illuminate, indicating the device is ready for operation.

5. Operation

The Systor duplicator offers various modes for copying and erasing data. Navigate through the menus using the control buttons (typically Up/Down arrows, ENT for Enter, and ESC for Escape).

5.1 Copy Modes

Select a copy mode based on your duplication needs. Ensure the source drive is in the Master slot and target drives are in the Target slots.

LCD screen displays showing 'Copy Area System and Files' and 'Copy Area Whole HDD' for copy modes, and 'Quick Erase', 'Full Erase', 'DoD Erase' for erase modes.
Figure 5.1: Copy and Erase Mode Options on LCD Display.
  • System and Files (Copy Area): This mode copies only the data content from the master source hard drive, excluding any unoccupied drive space. It is suitable for copying operating systems and user files.
  • Whole HDD (Copy Area): This mode performs a sector-by-sector copy of the entire content of the master source hard drive, including all partitions, hidden files, and unoccupied space. This ensures an exact mirror image of the source drive. This mode is recommended for creating bootable copies.

After selecting a copy mode, confirm the operation. The duplication process will begin, and progress will be displayed on the LCD screen. The copy speed will remain consistent regardless of the number of target drives.

5.2 Erase Modes

The duplicator offers secure data erasure options. Insert the drives to be erased into the Target slots.

  • Quick Erase: This mode quickly erases the data content of the target hard drive(s) by overwriting the file allocation table. It does not erase the format of the drives.
  • Full Erase: This mode performs a complete overwrite of all data content and format of the target hard drive(s).
  • DoD Erase: This mode complies with the USA Department of Defense (DoD 5220.22-M) standard. It erases all data bit-by-bit 3 times to guarantee permanent deletion, making data unrecoverable. This is recommended for sensitive data.

After selecting an erase mode, confirm the operation. The erasure process will begin, and progress will be displayed on the LCD screen.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Systor duplicator.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Do not use liquid cleaners or abrasive materials.
  • Drive Bays: Periodically inspect the drive bays for dust or debris. Use compressed air to gently clear any obstructions. Avoid touching the internal SATA connectors directly.
  • Storage: Store the duplicator in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures when not in use.
  • Firmware: Check the Systor website periodically for any available firmware updates.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter and provides solutions.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Duplicator does not power on.Power cable not connected; power outlet issue; power button not pressed.Ensure power cable is securely connected. Test power outlet with another device. Press the power button firmly.
Copy process is slow.Drive read/write speeds; expected performance. The duplicator copies at speeds up to 90MB/sec (5.4GB/min). Actual speed may vary depending on the read/write transfer rates of your specific source and target drives. This is the expected operational speed.
Cannot copy to a smaller target drive.Target drive capacity is insufficient. The duplicator requires target drives to be of equal or greater capacity than the source drive for successful duplication. This is a design limitation.
Drives are difficult to insert/remove.Improper alignment; debris in bay; worn connectors.Ensure drives are aligned correctly before inserting. Do not force drives. Gently slide them in. If resistance persists, inspect bays for debris. Handle with care to avoid damaging SATA connectors.
Copy/Erase percentage display freezes or blanks out after a long time.Known firmware behavior for long operations. This can occur during extended operations (e.g., copying very large drives). The process is likely still running. Allow the operation to complete. Do not interrupt the process.
Copied drive is not bootable.Source drive not bootable; incorrect copy mode.Ensure the source drive was bootable. Use the "Whole HDD" copy mode to create an exact sector-by-sector clone, which includes boot sectors and partitions.
