2. Safety Information

Read all instructions carefully before installation and operation. Failure to follow these instructions may result in property damage, serious injury, or death. Ensure all electrical connections are made by qualified personnel and comply with local and national electrical codes.

  • Always disconnect power before installing or servicing the beacon.
  • Mount the beacon securely to prevent detachment during vehicle operation.
  • Ensure proper wiring polarity to avoid damage to the unit.
  • Do not look directly into the LED light source when operating, as it may cause eye strain.
  • This product is intended for use on 12-24 Volt DC systems only.

3. Product Features

The Federal Signal Ultrastar LED Beacon incorporates several key features for optimal performance and safety:

  • Federal Signal patent-pending LED emitter design for enhanced visibility.
  • Industry-standard mounting for quick and easy retrofits.
  • 14 selectable flash patterns to suit various warning requirements.
  • Meets SAE J845, Class 1 approval standards.
  • Potted electrical components protect against vibration and moisture.

4. Installation

4.1 Mounting

The Ultrastar beacon is designed for permanent mounting. Select a flat, stable surface on the vehicle or equipment that provides clear visibility and is free from obstructions. Ensure the mounting location can support the weight of the beacon and withstand operational vibrations.

  1. Position the beacon at the desired mounting location.
  2. Mark the drilling points for the mounting hardware.
  3. Drill appropriate holes, ensuring they are sized correctly for the mounting bolts.
  4. Secure the beacon using the provided hardware, ensuring a tight and stable fit.

4.2 Wiring

Proper wiring is crucial for the beacon's functionality and safety. Refer to the vehicle's electrical system diagram and local regulations.

  1. Disconnect the vehicle's battery before making any electrical connections.
  2. Connect the red wire from the beacon to a fused 12-24 Volt DC positive (+) power source. The fuse should be rated appropriately for the beacon's current draw (refer to specifications).
  3. Connect the black wire from the beacon to a reliable vehicle chassis ground (-).
  4. Ensure all connections are secure and insulated to prevent short circuits.
  5. Reconnect the vehicle's battery and test the beacon's operation.

5. Operation

5.1 Powering On/Off

Once properly installed and wired, the beacon will activate when power is supplied to the red wire. To turn the beacon off, remove power from the red wire.

5.2 Selecting Flash Patterns (Power Select Feature)

The Ultrastar LED beacon features 14 selectable flash patterns using Federal Signal's patented Power Select feature. To change the flash pattern:

  1. Ensure the beacon is powered off.
  2. Apply power to the unit (turn on).
  3. Immediately cycle the power off and on two more times (total of three power cycles: ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON).
  4. The beacon will enter programming mode and display the next available flash pattern.
  5. Repeat the ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON sequence to cycle through the remaining flash patterns until the desired pattern is reached.
  6. Once the desired pattern is displayed, leave the power on for more than 5 seconds to save the selection. The beacon will then operate continuously with the chosen pattern.

5.3 Flash Pattern Demonstration Video

The following video demonstrates various flash patterns available on Federal Signal LED beacons. While featuring a Pulsator LED Beacon, the flash pattern selection process and visual effects are representative of similar Federal Signal LED warning lights, including the Ultrastar model. Users can observe different flash sequences and speeds.

6. Maintenance

The Federal Signal Ultrastar LED Beacon is designed for minimal maintenance. Regular inspection and cleaning will ensure optimal performance and longevity.

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the outer dome with a soft cloth and mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the lens.
  • Inspection: Regularly check mounting hardware for tightness and ensure all wiring connections are secure and free from corrosion or damage.
  • Dome Condition: Inspect the amber dome for cracks or discoloration. Replace if damaged to maintain light output and integrity.

7. Troubleshooting
