4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

The U1272A is powered by batteries. To install or replace batteries:

  1. Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF and disconnect all test leads from the terminals.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit (refer to Figure 3.3).
  3. Unscrew the retaining screws and carefully remove the cover.
  4. Insert new batteries, observing correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  5. Replace the cover and secure it with the screws.

4.2 Initial Power On

After battery installation, turn the rotary switch to any function to power on the device. The OLED display will illuminate, and a self-test will be performed. If the display does not light up, check battery installation.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Basic Measurements

To perform basic measurements, select the desired function using the rotary switch and connect the test leads to the appropriate input terminals.

  • Voltage Measurement (V~, V-): Connect the red lead to the VΩHz terminal and the black lead to the COM terminal. Select AC (V~) or DC (V-) voltage.
  • Current Measurement (A, mA, µA): Connect the red lead to the appropriate current terminal (10A, 440mA, or µA) and the black lead to the COM terminal. Select the desired current range. Ensure the circuit is de-energized before connecting the multimeter in series.
  • Resistance Measurement (Ω): Connect the red lead to the VΩHz terminal and the black lead to the COM terminal. Select the Ω function.
  • Continuity Test (audible beep and visual alert): Connect the red lead to the VΩHz terminal and the black lead to the COM terminal. Select the continuity function. The meter will beep and visually alert for continuity.

5.2 Advanced Features

  • LPF (Low Pass Filter): Activates a low pass filter to remove high-frequency noise and harmonics, useful for measurements on variable frequency drives (VFDs).
  • Qik-V: Allows for quick determination of AC or DC voltage without manually selecting the mode.
  • Data Logging: The U1272A can store up to 10,000 readings. Refer to the detailed user manual for instructions on setting up logging intervals and transferring data to a PC.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

To clean the multimeter, wipe the case with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the device is powered off and leads are disconnected before cleaning.

6.2 Calibration

The U1272A is factory calibrated. For continued accuracy, periodic calibration by a qualified service center is recommended. Refer to Keysight's official support channels for calibration services.
