Flint & Walling EK05S Shallow Well Jet Pump System User Manual

Model: EK05S

1/2 HP Shallow Well Jet Pump

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient installation, operation, and maintenance of your Flint & Walling EK05S Shallow Well Jet Pump System. Please read this manual thoroughly before attempting to install or operate the pump. Retain this manual for future reference.

2. Safety Information

Always observe basic safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and personal injury. Failure to follow these instructions can result in serious injury or death.

  • Electrical Hazard: Ensure the power supply is disconnected before performing any installation, maintenance, or service. All electrical wiring must comply with local codes and be performed by a qualified electrician.
  • Moving Parts: Keep hands, feet, and clothing away from moving parts.
  • Pressure Hazard: The pump operates under pressure. Relieve all system pressure before servicing.
  • Water Temperature: Do not pump liquids hotter than 140°F (60°C).
  • Grounding: The pump must be properly grounded to prevent electric shock.

3. Product Overview

The Flint & Walling EK05S is a 1/2 HP shallow well jet pump system designed for reliable water supply from shallow wells. It includes an ejector and a pressure switch for automated operation.

4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Pre-Installation Checks

  • Verify that the well provides sufficient water for the pump's capacity.
  • Ensure the installation site is level, dry, well-ventilated, and protected from freezing temperatures.
  • Confirm power supply matches pump requirements (115/230V AC).

4.2 Mounting the Pump

Securely mount the pump to a solid, level surface using appropriate bolts and washers. This minimizes vibration and ensures stable operation.

4.3 Plumbing Connections

  1. Connect the suction line from the well to the pump's inlet (1-1/4 inch NPT). Use a foot valve at the end of the suction line in the well.
  2. Connect the discharge line to your plumbing system at the pump's outlet (3/4 inch NPT).
  3. Use pipe sealant on all threaded connections to prevent leaks.
  4. Install a shut-off valve on the discharge side for maintenance purposes.

4.4 Electrical Connections

  • Ensure the main power supply is OFF at the circuit breaker.
  • Wire the pump according to the wiring diagram provided on the motor or in the pressure switch cover.
  • Connect the pump to a dedicated, properly grounded electrical circuit.
  • Verify voltage selection (115V or 230V) matches your supply and is correctly configured on the motor.

4.5 Priming the Pump

Before initial operation, the pump must be primed:

  1. Remove the priming plug located on the top of the pump casing.
  2. Fill the pump casing and the entire suction line with clean water until it overflows from the priming hole.
  3. Replace the priming plug securely.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Initial Start-Up

  1. Ensure the pump is properly primed.
  2. Open a faucet in the plumbing system to allow air to escape.
  3. Restore power to the pump. The pump should start and begin to build pressure.
  4. Once water flows steadily from the faucet, close it. The pump will continue to run until the system pressure reaches the cut-off setting of the pressure switch (60 psi).

5.2 Normal Operation

The pressure switch automatically controls the pump, turning it on when system pressure drops below the cut-in setting and off when it reaches the cut-off setting. Monitor for unusual noises or vibrations.

5.3 Shutting Down

For temporary shutdown, simply turn off the power to the pump at the circuit breaker. For extended periods of non-use, especially in freezing conditions, follow winterization procedures.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Regular Checks

  • Inspect all plumbing connections for leaks.
  • Check electrical connections for corrosion or damage.
  • Listen for unusual noises from the motor or pump.
  • Ensure the area around the pump is clean and free of debris.

6.2 Winterization

If the pump is installed in an area subject to freezing temperatures and will not be used, it must be drained to prevent damage:

  1. Disconnect power to the pump.
  2. Open a faucet in the system to relieve pressure.
  3. Remove the drain plug from the pump casing and allow all water to drain.
  4. Disconnect the suction and discharge lines and drain them completely.
  5. Store the pump in a warm, dry place if possible, or ensure all components are thoroughly dry before reassembly.

7. Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions for common issues. For problems not listed, contact qualified service personnel.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Pump does not startNo power; tripped breaker; faulty wiring; motor issueCheck power supply, reset breaker, inspect wiring, consult electrician
Pump runs but no waterPump not primed; air leak in suction line; low water level in well; clogged foot valveRe-prime pump, check all suction connections, verify well water level, clean foot valve
Low pressure or intermittent flowAir in system; partially clogged lines; worn pump components; pressure switch settingBleed air from system, check for clogs, inspect pump impeller, adjust pressure switch
Pump cycles too frequentlyWaterlogged pressure tank; small leak in system; faulty pressure switchCheck pressure tank air charge, inspect for leaks, replace pressure switch if faulty
