Bowens BW-1500 Lumiair Softbox 60x80 Instruction Manual

Model: BW-1500

1. Introduction

The Bowens BW-1500 Lumiair Softbox 60x80 is a professional light modifier designed for studio and location photography. It provides a soft, even light source ideal for portraiture, product photography, and fashion work. This manual outlines the proper assembly, operation, and maintenance procedures to ensure optimal performance and longevity of your softbox.

2. Safety Information

  • Always ensure the softbox is securely mounted to your flash system and light stand to prevent accidental falls.
  • Do not expose the softbox to excessive heat or open flames, as this may damage the material.
  • Keep the softbox away from water and moisture to prevent electrical hazards if used with powered lighting equipment.
  • Handle support rods with care during assembly and disassembly to avoid injury.
  • Store the softbox in its protective carry case when not in use to prevent damage.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all components are present before beginning assembly:

  • Main Softbox Canopy (60cm x 80cm)
  • Rear Cowell
  • Front Diffuser
  • Support Rods (quantity as required for assembly)
  • Zip-up Carry Case
  • Note: The Lumiair 60-80 model does not include an internal diffuser.

4. Setup and Assembly

Follow these steps to assemble your Bowens Lumiair Softbox:

  1. Unpack Components: Carefully remove all items from the carry case.
  2. Insert Support Rods: Lay the main softbox canopy flat. Insert the ends of the support rods into the designated pockets on the inside corners of the softbox. Gently bend the rods to create tension and secure them into the central speed ring adapter (sold separately). Ensure the rods are evenly tensioned for a straight edge.
  3. Attach Rear Cowell: Secure the rear Cowell around the opening where the speed ring adapter is attached. This helps to control light spill from the back of the flash unit.
  4. Attach Front Diffuser: Fasten the front diffuser panel to the outer edge of the softbox using the hook-and-loop fasteners. Ensure it is taut and evenly spread across the opening.
  5. Mount to Flash System: Attach the assembled softbox, via its speed ring adapter, to your compatible flash head or studio strobe. Ensure it is firmly locked in place.
  6. Mount to Light Stand: Place your flash system with the attached softbox onto a sturdy light stand. Adjust the height and angle as needed.

5. Operating Instructions

The Lumiair Softbox is designed to provide a highly efficient and evenly diffused light source.

  • Light Quality: The two layers of diffusion (front diffuser) work together to create a soft, even spread of light with minimal hotspots, typically no more than 1/2 stop from center to edge.
  • Positioning: Experiment with the distance and angle of the softbox relative to your subject to achieve the desired lighting effect. Closer positioning will result in softer light and more dramatic fall-off.
  • Compatibility: The Lumiair softbox is compatible with a wide range of flash systems through the use of appropriate Bowens ring adapters (sold separately).

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Gently wipe the exterior of the softbox with a soft, damp cloth if it becomes dirty. For the diffusion panels, use a lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Storage: After use, disassemble the softbox and store all components in the provided zip-up carry case. This protects the materials from dust, dirt, and physical damage during transport and storage.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the support rods, fabric, and fasteners for any signs of wear or damage. Replace damaged components as necessary.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Uneven Light Spread:
    • Ensure the front diffuser is attached smoothly and tautly, without wrinkles.
    • Verify that the flash tube is centered within the softbox.
  • Difficulty Assembling Rods:
    • Ensure rods are inserted into the correct pockets.
    • Apply gentle, even pressure. It may require some force due to the precision tension design.
  • Softbox Not Secure on Flash:
    • Confirm that the correct Bowens ring adapter is being used for your flash system.
    • Ensure the adapter is properly seated and locked onto the flash head.
