Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation of your Orange CS50 Custom Shop 50-Watt Tube Head. The CS50 is a versatile guitar amplifier head featuring switchable Class A/B (50 watts) and Class A (30 watts) power modes, along with an HF drive and footswitchable sustain boost. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the amplifier.
Important Safety Information
- Always connect the amplifier to a speaker cabinet with the correct impedance before powering on. Failure to do so can cause severe damage to the amplifier.
- Ensure the amplifier is properly grounded.
- Do not expose the amplifier to moisture or extreme temperatures.
- Refer all servicing to qualified personnel. High voltages are present inside.
- Unplug the amplifier from the mains power supply before cleaning or when not in use for extended periods.
Setup
Unpacking
Carefully remove the amplifier from its packaging. Inspect for any signs of damage during transit. Retain the packaging for future transport or storage.
Connections
1. Speaker Connection: Connect the amplifier's speaker output to a suitable speaker cabinet using a high-quality speaker cable. Ensure the impedance of the speaker cabinet matches the selected output impedance on the amplifier (8 Ohm or 16 Ohm). The rear panel of the amplifier provides options for 8 Ohm and 16 Ohm speaker outputs.

2. Instrument Input: Connect your guitar or instrument to the 'INPUT' jack on the front panel using a standard instrument cable.
3. Power Connection: Connect the supplied AC power cord to the amplifier's power inlet and then to a grounded mains power outlet.
4. Footswitch (Optional): If using a footswitch for the sustain boost feature, connect it to the designated footswitch jack on the front panel.
Operation
Front Panel Controls

Image: Front panel of the Orange CS50 amplifier, displaying the input jack, control knobs for volume, tone, HF drive, and the Class A/B switch.
- INPUT: Connect your instrument here.
- VOLUME: Controls the overall output level of the amplifier.
- TONE: Adjusts the amplifier's tonal characteristics, from darker to brighter.
- HF DRIVE: (High Frequency Drive) Adds an extra dimension to your sound, enhancing high-frequency harmonics and presence.
- SUSTAIN BOOST: Engages a boost circuit for increased sustain. This feature can be activated via a footswitch.
- CLASS A/B (50W) / CLASS A (30W) Switch: Selects between 50 watts of Class A/B power for a more dynamic response or 30 watts of Class A power for a warmer, more compressed tone.
- POWER Switch: Turns the amplifier on and off. Allow a brief warm-up period after turning on.
Powering On and Off
- Ensure all connections are secure and volume controls are set to minimum.
- Flip the POWER switch to the 'ON' position. The indicator light will illuminate.
- Allow approximately 30-60 seconds for the tubes to warm up before playing.
- To power off, turn the POWER switch to 'OFF'.
Maintenance
Cleaning
Clean the amplifier's exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the amplifier is unplugged before cleaning.
Tube Replacement
Vacuum tubes have a finite lifespan and will eventually need replacement. If you notice a decrease in performance, excessive noise, or inconsistent sound, tube replacement may be necessary. This procedure should only be performed by a qualified technician due to high internal voltages.
Storage
When not in use, store the amplifier in a dry, temperature-controlled environment, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No Sound | Power not connected; Speaker not connected; Instrument cable faulty; Volume set to zero; Tubes failed. | Check power and speaker connections; Test instrument cable; Increase volume; Consult technician for tube inspection. |
| Humming/Buzzing Noise | Ground loop; Faulty cables; Nearby electrical interference; Worn tubes. | Ensure proper grounding; Try different cables; Move amplifier away from other electronics; Consult technician for tube inspection. |
| Weak or Distorted Sound | Worn tubes; Incorrect impedance match; Speaker damage. | Consult technician for tube replacement; Verify speaker impedance matches amplifier setting; Check speaker cabinet. |
If these steps do not resolve the issue, contact qualified service personnel.
