1. Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for operating your Canon EOS Rebel SL1 Digital Camera. 3. Camera Overview

Familiarize yourself with the main components and controls of your EOS Rebel SL1 camera.

3.1 Rear View and Controls

3.2 Top View and Mode Dial

4. Setup

4.1 Attaching the Lens

  1. Remove the rear lens cap and the camera body cap.
  2. Align the red or white index mark on the lens with the corresponding mark on the camera body.
  3. Turn the lens clockwise until it clicks into place.

4.2 Inserting the Battery and Memory Card

  1. Open the battery compartment cover on the bottom of the camera.
  2. Insert the LP-E12 battery pack with the electrical contacts facing inward until it locks.
  3. Open the memory card slot cover.
  4. Insert an SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card with the label facing the back of the camera until it clicks.
  5. Close both covers securely.

5. Operating the Camera

5.1 Power On/Off

To turn the camera on or off, use the ON/OFF switch located near the mode dial.

5.2 Basic Shooting Modes

  • Scene Intelligent Auto (Green Square): The camera automatically analyzes the scene and sets optimal settings.
  • Creative Auto (CA): Offers more control over background blur and other settings while still being largely automatic.
  • Scene Modes (SCN): Includes specialized settings for portraits, landscapes, close-ups, sports, and more.

5.3 Autofocus and Shutter

The camera features a 9-point AF system for precise focusing. Press the shutter button halfway down to focus, then press fully to take the picture. Hybrid CMOS AF II provides fast and accurate autofocus in Live View and Movie modes.

5.4 Video Recording

To record video, set the mode dial to the movie camera icon. The EOS Full HD Movie mode offers continuous focus tracking (Movie Servo AF), manual exposure control, and multiple frame rates (1080: 30p/24p/25p, 720: 60p/50p, 480: 30p/25p).

6. Advanced Features

For more creative control, explore the advanced shooting modes:

  • Program AE (P): The camera sets the shutter speed and aperture, but you can adjust other settings.
  • Shutter-priority AE (Tv): You set the shutter speed, and the camera selects the appropriate aperture. Ideal for controlling motion blur.
  • Aperture-priority AE (Av): You set the aperture, and the camera selects the appropriate shutter speed. Ideal for controlling depth of field.
  • Manual Exposure (M): You control both shutter speed and aperture for complete creative freedom.

6.1 ISO Sensitivity

Adjust ISO to control the camera's sensitivity to light. The EOS Rebel SL1 offers ISO 100–12800 (expandable to H: 25600) for stills and ISO–6400 (expandable to H: 12800) for videos, allowing shooting in various lighting conditions.

6.2 Touchscreen Functions

The 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor II supports multi-touch gestures, allowing direct access to functions for setting changes and Touch AF for an easy, intuitive experience.

8. Maintenance

8.1 Cleaning the Camera

  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the camera body.
