Setup Instructions

Follow these steps to prepare your snail habitat:

  1. Prepare the Habitat: Clean the clear tank and lid with water only. Do not use soap or detergents, as residues can be harmful to snails.
  2. Add Substrate: Place a layer of moist soil or compost (not included) at the bottom of the tank, approximately 1-2 inches deep. Ensure the soil is free from pesticides, fertilizers, or other chemicals.
  3. Introduce Decorations: Arrange small twigs, leaves, and other natural elements (not included) inside the tank. These provide hiding places, climbing opportunities, and enrichment for the snails. Ensure all items are clean and safe.
  4. Provide Water Source: Use the pipette to gently moisten the soil and leaves daily to maintain a humid environment, which is crucial for snails. You may also place a very shallow, stable dish of water (not included) in the tank, ensuring snails can easily access and exit it without drowning.
  5. Finding Snails: Refer to the included instruction booklet for detailed guidance on safely finding and collecting snails from your garden or local environment. Handle snails gently to avoid injury.
  6. Introducing Snails: Carefully transfer the collected snails into their new habitat.
  7. Secure the Lid: Place the lid securely on the tank. The lid is designed with small ventilation holes to allow air circulation while preventing escapes.

Snail Care and Observation

Feeding

Snails are herbivores. Offer a variety of fresh, washed vegetables and fruits such as lettuce, cucumber slices, apple slices, and carrot. Always remove uneaten food daily to prevent mold growth, which can be harmful to your snails and their environment.

Humidity and Airflow

Maintain a humid environment by misting the inside of the tank with water daily using the pipette. Ensure adequate airflow by regularly checking that the lid's ventilation holes are not blocked. If snails appear lethargic or inactive, temporarily remove the lid for a short period (5-10 minutes) to allow fresh air circulation, then replace it securely. This helps to refresh the air and reduce accumulated carbon dioxide.

Observation

Use the provided field lens to observe the snails up close. Pay attention to their movement, feeding habits, and interactions with their environment. The instruction booklet offers further details on snail biology and behavior, enhancing your observation experience.

Maintenance

Cleaning the Habitat

Regularly inspect the tank for any signs of mold, excessive waste, or decaying food. Promptly remove any such items using the tweezers to maintain a healthy environment for your snails.

Full Cleaning

Approximately once a month, or more frequently if needed, perform a thorough cleaning. Carefully transfer the snails to the small tub provided. Remove all substrate and decorations from the main tank. Wash the tank and lid with warm water only; avoid using any soaps or chemical cleaners. Rinse all components thoroughly. Replace with fresh, moist substrate and clean decorations before gently returning the snails to their refreshed habitat.

Troubleshooting

  • Snails are inactive: Check the humidity levels within the tank. Mist the tank with water using the pipette to increase moisture. Ensure there is fresh food available. Verify that the ventilation holes in the lid are clear and not obstructed. If necessary, temporarily remove the lid for a short period to allow fresh air to circulate.
  • Mold in the tank: Immediately remove any items showing mold growth. If mold is a recurring issue, consider slightly reducing the humidity by misting less frequently or ensuring better ventilation. A thorough cleaning of the tank may be required if mold is widespread.
  • Snails are trying to escape: Ensure the lid is securely fastened to the tank and check for any gaps. Snails may attempt to escape if their living conditions are not optimal, such as if the environment is too dry, food is scarce, or the air quality is poor. Review the setup and care instructions.
