2. Setup
2.1 Speaker Placement
Proper speaker placement is crucial for optimal sound performance. For a 5.2 channel system:
- Front Speakers: Place the left and right front speakers equidistant from your primary listening position, forming an equilateral triangle with the listener.
- Center Speaker: Position the center speaker directly above or below your TV, centered with the screen.
- Surround Speakers: Place the surround speakers to the sides or slightly behind the listening position, at ear level or slightly above.
- Subwoofers: Experiment with subwoofer placement. Often, placing them in a corner or near a wall can enhance bass response.
2.2 Connections
Ensure all components are powered off before making connections.
- Speaker Connections: Connect each speaker to the corresponding terminals on the receiver. Ensure positive (+) terminals connect to positive and negative (-) to negative. Use appropriate gauge speaker wire. Verify that speaker wires are not frayed or touching each other, which can cause short circuits.
- Audio/Video Inputs: Connect your source devices (e.g., Blu-ray player, TV, gaming console) to the appropriate HDMI, optical, or analog audio inputs on the receiver.
- Power Connection: Once all other connections are secure, plug the AC power cord into a wall outlet.

3.2 Sound Modes
The HT-M5 features various sound modes to optimize your listening experience:
- ClearAudio+: This Sony-exclusive technology automatically adjusts sound settings for an optimal listening experience, enhancing clarity and richness.
- Surround Modes: Select from various surround sound modes (e.g., Cinema, Music, Game) to match your content. Refer to the on-screen display or receiver's display for available options.
4. Maintenance
4.1 Cleaning
To maintain the appearance and performance of your system:
- Wipe surfaces with a soft, dry cloth.
- Do not use abrasive cloths, scouring powder, or solvents such as alcohol or benzene.
4.2 Ventilation
Ensure adequate ventilation around the receiver and speakers to prevent overheating. Do not block ventilation openings. Avoid placing the system in an enclosed cabinet without proper airflow.
5. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter. If the problem persists after trying these solutions, contact Sony customer support.
5.1 "PROTECTOR" Mode Indication
If your system displays "PROTECTOR" (sometimes alternating with "PUSH POWER"), it indicates a safety mechanism has been activated to prevent damage. This can be caused by:
- Short circuits in speaker wires (frayed wires touching).
- Incorrect speaker impedance (using speakers with lower impedance than recommended).
- Faulty connections.
- Overheating due to insufficient ventilation.
- Power fluctuations.
Resolution Steps:
- Disconnect Power: Turn off the system and unplug the AC power cord from the wall socket. Leave it unplugged for at least 30 minutes to allow internal circuits to reset.
- Check Ventilation: Ensure the system has adequate airflow around it.
- Inspect Speaker Wires: Disconnect all speaker wires from the receiver. Carefully inspect each wire for damage, fraying, or short circuits. Reconnect them securely and correctly (+ to +, - to -).
- Reduce Volume: If the system was operating at very high volume, try turning the volume down before powering on again.
- Verify Speaker Impedance: Confirm that your speakers' impedance matches the recommended range for the HT-M5 system.
- Test Speakers Individually: If the issue persists, try connecting one front speaker at a time and testing the system at low volume to isolate a potentially faulty speaker.
5.2 No Sound
- Check that the correct input source is selected.
- Ensure speaker wires are securely connected to both the receiver and speakers.
- Verify that the volume is not set to minimum or muted.
5.3 Distorted Sound
- Check speaker wire connections for loose strands or shorts.
- Ensure the input source is not sending a distorted signal.
- Reduce the volume level if it's too high.
