Introduction
The MXR M222 Talk Box is a compact and pedalboard-friendly effects unit designed to produce the classic talk box sound. This device integrates its own amplifier and speaker driver, eliminating the need for a separate rig or patching into your amplifier's speaker output. It features Volume, Tone, and Gain controls, allowing for precise shaping of the talk box effect. This manual provides detailed instructions for setting up, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting your MXR M222 Talk Box.
Package Contents
- MXR M222 Talk Box Pedal
- 18-volt Power Supply
- 8-foot Surgical Tube
- Mic Stand Clip
Setup
1. Connecting the Power Supply
Connect the included 18-volt power supply to the power input jack on the rear of the Talk Box. Ensure the power supply is connected to a suitable electrical outlet.

2. Instrument and Amplifier Connections
Connect your instrument (e.g., guitar) to the INPUT jack on the rear of the Talk Box using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable. Connect the OUTPUT jack of the Talk Box to your amplifier's input using another 1/4-inch instrument cable.
3. Attaching the Surgical Tube
Insert one end of the 8-foot surgical tube into the tube connector on the top of the Talk Box. Secure the other end of the tube to your microphone stand using the provided mic stand clip, positioning the open end of the tube near your mouth for vocal articulation.

4. Microphone Placement
Position your vocal microphone to pick up the sound from the open end of the surgical tube. The microphone should be close to the tube's opening to capture the modulated sound effectively.
Operation
1. Activating the Effect
Press the footswitch on the Talk Box to engage or bypass the effect. The LED indicator will illuminate when the effect is active.

2. Control Knobs
- VOLUME: Adjusts the overall output level of the Talk Box effect.
- TONE: Shapes the tonal characteristics of the effect, from darker to brighter.
- GAIN: Controls the amount of distortion or overdrive applied to the signal before it enters the talk box.
3. Using the Talk Box Effect
While playing your instrument and with the Talk Box engaged, place the open end of the surgical tube into your mouth. Articulate words or shape your mouth to create vocal-like sounds with your instrument's signal. The sound is then picked up by your vocal microphone and sent to the PA system.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning
Wipe the exterior of the Talk Box with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. The surgical tube can be cleaned with mild soap and water, ensuring it is thoroughly dry before re-use.
2. Tube Replacement
The surgical tube is designed for durability but may require replacement over time due to wear or hygiene. Replacement tubes are available from authorized MXR dealers.
Troubleshooting
- No Sound: Check all cable connections (instrument, amplifier, power). Ensure the Talk Box is receiving power and the footswitch LED is illuminated when engaged. Verify your instrument and amplifier are functioning correctly.
- Weak Effect: Adjust the VOLUME and GAIN knobs on the Talk Box. Ensure your microphone is properly positioned to capture the sound from the surgical tube. Check the microphone's input level on your mixer/PA system.
- Unwanted Noise/Feedback: Reduce the GAIN setting. Ensure proper grounding of all equipment. Adjust microphone placement to minimize feedback.
- Tube Issues: If the surgical tube is kinked, blocked, or damaged, it can affect sound quality. Ensure it is clear and properly connected.
