Setup
1. Charging the Device
Before initial use, fully charge the Garmin GLO receiver. Connect the included USB cable to the GLO and then to a USB power source (e.g., computer, USB wall adapter). Alternatively, use the vehicle power cable for charging in a car. The orange indicator light will flash during charging and become solid when fully charged. The device will power on automatically when plugged in and remain on until fully charged.
2. Powering On/Off
Press and hold the power button located on the side of the device until the indicator lights illuminate. To power off, press and hold the power button again until the lights turn off.
3. Bluetooth Pairing
- Ensure the Garmin GLO is powered on and the blue light is flashing, indicating it's in pairing mode.
- On your smartphone, tablet, or laptop, navigate to the Bluetooth settings.
- Search for available devices and select "Garmin GLO" from the list.
- If prompted for a passcode, enter 1234.
- Once paired, the blue indicator light on the GLO will become solid.
Note: Some devices may require a specific application to enable an external GPS source. For Android devices, apps like "Bluetooth GPS" can facilitate this connection.
4. Satellite Acquisition
After successful Bluetooth pairing, place the Garmin GLO in an area with a clear view of the sky. The green indicator light will flash while searching for satellites and become solid once a GPS signal is acquired. The GLO utilizes both GPS and GLONASS constellations, allowing for faster acquisition and improved accuracy.
Operating the Device
Optimal Placement
For best performance, place the Garmin GLO in a location with an unobstructed view of the sky. In a vehicle, this typically means on the dashboard. The device can also receive a good signal from a pocket or backpack, but direct line-of-sight to satellites is ideal.
Battery Life
The Garmin GLO provides up to 12 hours of continuous operation on a full charge. Actual battery life may vary based on usage and environmental factors. To conserve battery, power off the device when not in use.
Compatible Applications
The GLO works seamlessly with various mapping and navigation applications. Examples include Garmin StreetPilot (for turn-by-turn instructions), BlueChart Mobile, and Fishing My-Cast. Ensure your chosen application is configured to use an external GPS source if necessary.
Maintenance
Cleaning the Device
Wipe the exterior of the GLO with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the device's surface.
Battery Care and Storage
- Store the device in a cool, dry place when not in use.
- For long-term storage, charge the battery to approximately 50% to prolong its lifespan.
- Avoid exposing the device to extreme temperatures.
Firmware Updates
Garmin may release firmware updates to improve performance or add new features. It is recommended to periodically check the official Garmin website for available updates for your GLO device. Updates typically involve connecting the device to a computer and using Garmin's update software.
