Product Overview

Main Components and Controls

Familiarize yourself with the key components and controls of your Janome 712T sewing machine.

Stitch Selector and Stitch Length Dials

Figure 2: Stitch Selector and Stitch Length Dials. The left dial controls the stitch pattern, while the right dial adjusts the stitch length from 0 to 4 and includes a stretch stitch (S.S.) setting.

  • Stitch Selector Dial (Left Dial in Figure 2): Used to select the desired stitch pattern. Rotate the dial to align the desired stitch symbol with the indicator mark.
  • Stitch Length Dial (Right Dial in Figure 2): Controls the length of the stitches. Settings range from 0 (for basting or gathering) to 4 (for longer stitches). The "S.S." setting is for stretch stitches.
Stitch Pattern Guide

Figure 3: Stitch Pattern Guide. This guide, located on the machine's body, illustrates the various stitch patterns available, corresponding to the settings on the stitch selector dial.

Thread Tension Dial

Figure 4: Thread Tension Dial. This dial adjusts the tension of the upper thread, crucial for balanced stitches. Settings typically range from 0 to 9, with 'AUTO' for general sewing.

  • Thread Tension Dial (Figure 4): Adjusts the tension of the upper thread. Proper tension is essential for forming balanced stitches. A setting of 'AUTO' or a mid-range number (e.g., 3-5) is usually suitable for most fabrics.
  • Needle Plate (Figure 5): The metal plate under the needle, often with seam allowance guides.
  • Presser Foot (Figure 6): Holds the fabric firmly against the feed dogs while sewing.
  • Handwheel: Located on the right side of the machine, used to manually raise and lower the needle. Always turn the handwheel towards you.
  • Bobbin Winder: Used to wind thread onto the bobbin.

Setup

1. Placing the Machine in a Treadle Cabinet

The Janome 712T is designed to be installed into a compatible treadle sewing machine cabinet. Ensure the cabinet is sturdy and level. Carefully lower the machine into the cabinet opening, ensuring it sits securely on its hinges. Some adjustments to the cabinet or machine might be necessary for a perfect fit, especially with antique cabinets.

2. Attaching the Treadle Belt

The treadle belt connects the machine's handwheel to the treadle mechanism in the cabinet. Loop the belt around the handwheel and the large wheel of the treadle mechanism. The belt should be taut enough to transmit power efficiently but not so tight that it causes strain. If the belt is too long, it may need to be shortened and re-joined. Proper belt tension is crucial for smooth operation.

3. Winding the Bobbin

  1. Place an empty bobbin onto the bobbin winder spindle.
  2. Place a spool of thread on the spool pin.
  3. Guide the thread through the bobbin winding tension disc.
  4. Wrap the thread around the bobbin a few times, then push the bobbin winder spindle to the right to engage it.
  5. Operate the treadle to wind the thread evenly onto the bobbin. Stop when the bobbin is full, then cut the thread and return the spindle to the left.

4. Inserting the Bobbin

Bobbin Area and Needle Plate

Figure 5: Bobbin Area and Needle Plate. This view shows the clear bobbin cover and the needle plate with seam allowance markings, indicating where the bobbin is inserted.

  1. Open the bobbin cover plate (Figure 5).
  2. Insert the wound bobbin into the bobbin case, ensuring the thread unwinds in the correct direction (usually counter-clockwise).
  3. Guide the bobbin thread through the tension spring in the bobbin case.
  4. Close the bobbin cover plate.

5. Threading the Upper Thread

Needle and Presser Foot Assembly

Figure 6: Needle and Presser Foot Assembly. This close-up shows the needle, presser foot, and the area where the upper thread is guided through the needle eye.

  1. Raise the presser foot lever.
  2. Place a spool of thread on the spool pin.
  3. Guide the thread through the upper thread guides.
  4. Pass the thread down through the tension discs and up through the take-up lever.
  5. Thread the needle from front to back (Figure 6).
  6. Pull the bobbin thread up through the needle plate by turning the handwheel towards you to lower and raise the needle once.
  7. Pull both threads under the presser foot and towards the back of the machine.

Operating Instructions

1. Selecting a Stitch Pattern

Rotate the Stitch Selector Dial (Figure 2, left) to choose your desired stitch pattern. Refer to the Stitch Pattern Guide (Figure 3) for available options. Ensure the needle is in its highest position before changing stitch patterns.

2. Adjusting Stitch Length

Use the Stitch Length Dial (Figure 2, right) to set the desired stitch length. For most general sewing, a setting between 2 and 3 is appropriate. Use 'S.S.' for stretch fabrics. For basting, use a longer stitch length (e.g., 4).

3. Adjusting Thread Tension

The Thread Tension Dial (Figure 4) controls the tightness of the upper thread. For balanced stitches, the upper and lower threads should interlock evenly between the fabric layers. If the upper thread lies flat on the fabric surface and the bobbin thread shows on top, the upper tension is too tight. If the bobbin thread lies flat and the upper thread shows on the bottom, the upper tension is too loose. Adjust incrementally until stitches are balanced.

4. Basic Sewing

  1. Place the fabric under the presser foot, aligning the raw edge with a seam guide on the needle plate (Figure 5).
  2. Lower the presser foot lever.
  3. Begin operating the treadle with your feet in a rhythmic motion to start sewing. The machine will feed the fabric automatically.
  4. Guide the fabric gently; do not pull or push it, as this can bend the needle or affect stitch quality.
  5. To stop sewing, cease treadle motion and turn the handwheel towards you to raise the needle to its highest position.
  6. Raise the presser foot lever and remove the fabric, cutting the threads.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

Regular cleaning is essential for smooth operation. Use a small brush (like the one shown in Figure 7) to remove lint and dust from the bobbin area, feed dogs, and under the needle plate. Periodically remove the needle plate for a more thorough cleaning.

Sewing Machine Accessories

Figure 7: Sewing Machine Accessories. This image displays various accessories including needles, bobbins, different presser feet, a screwdriver, and a cleaning brush, all useful for maintenance and different sewing tasks.

2. Oiling

Apply a small drop of high-quality sewing machine oil to moving metal parts, especially in the bobbin area and any designated oiling points. Refer to your machine's specific oiling diagram if available. Do not over-oil. Wipe away any excess oil before sewing to prevent staining fabric.

3. Needle Replacement

Replace the needle regularly (after 8-10 hours of sewing or when it becomes dull or bent). Use the correct type and size of needle for your fabric. To replace, loosen the needle clamp screw, remove the old needle, insert the new needle with the flat side facing the back, and tighten the screw securely.

Troubleshooting
