Operating Instructions

Making Espresso:

  1. Ensure the water tank is filled and the machine is preheated (indicator light solid).
  2. Select the appropriate filter basket (one-cup or two-cup) and place it into the portafilter.
  3. Add finely ground coffee to the filter basket. For a single shot, use approximately 7g; for a double shot, use 14g. Tamp the coffee evenly with a tamper.
  4. Attach the portafilter to the brewing head by aligning it and twisting firmly to the right until secure.
  5. Place one or two espresso cups on the drip tray beneath the portafilter spouts.
  6. Press the espresso button. The machine will begin brewing.
  7. Once the desired amount of espresso is dispensed (typically 25-30ml per shot), press the espresso button again to stop the flow.
  8. Carefully remove the portafilter, discard the used coffee grounds, and rinse the portafilter and filter basket.

Frothing Milk:

  1. Fill a stainless steel frothing pitcher with cold milk (do not fill more than halfway).
  2. Press the steam button to activate the steam function. Wait for the steam indicator light to illuminate steadily, indicating the machine has reached steaming temperature.
  3. Position the steam wand just below the surface of the milk. Open the steam knob slowly to release steam.
  4. Lower the pitcher slightly to introduce air into the milk, creating foam. Once desired foam is achieved, submerge the wand deeper to heat the milk.
  5. Close the steam knob and turn off the steam function.
  6. Wipe the steam wand immediately with a damp cloth to prevent milk residue from drying.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Regular cleaning ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Kenwood ES021.

  • Daily Cleaning:
    • Empty and rinse the drip tray and grid after each use.
    • Clean the portafilter and filter basket after each use.
    • Wipe the steam wand immediately after frothing milk.
    • Wipe the exterior of the machine with a damp cloth.
  • Water Tank: Clean the water tank regularly with warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly.
  • Descaling: Depending on water hardness and frequency of use, descale the machine every 2-3 months. Use a commercial descaling solution suitable for coffee machines and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Storage: If storing the machine for an extended period, ensure it is clean, dry, and the water tank is empty.
