4. Setup

Before operating the router, ensure proper setup for safety and optimal performance.

4.1 Installing a Router Bit

  1. Ensure the router is unplugged from the power source.
  2. Press and hold the spindle lock button.
  3. Using the appropriate wrench, loosen the collet nut.
  4. Insert the shank of the desired router bit into the collet. Ensure the bit is inserted far enough to provide a secure grip, but not bottomed out.
  5. Tighten the collet nut firmly with the wrench while holding the spindle lock button. Release the spindle lock.

4.2 Adjusting Routing Depth

  1. Place the router on a flat surface with the desired bit installed.
  2. Loosen the depth adjustment lock.
  3. Lower the router until the bit touches the workpiece surface.
  4. Use the micrometric depth adjustment knob to set the desired routing depth.
  5. Tighten the depth adjustment lock securely.

4.3 Dust Extraction

Attach the included dust collector to the router's dust port. Connect a suitable vacuum cleaner or dust extraction system to the dust collector for a cleaner work environment and improved visibility.

5. Operating Instructions

Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including eye and hearing protection before operating the router.

5.1 Powering On and Speed Control

  1. Plug the router into a suitable power outlet (230V).
  2. Use the variable speed dial to select the appropriate rotation speed for your material and router bit. Lower speeds are generally used for larger bits, harder materials, or when more control is needed. Higher speeds are for smaller bits and softer materials.
  3. Press the power switch to turn on the router. Allow the motor to reach full speed before engaging the workpiece.

5.2 Routing Techniques

Hold the router firmly with both hands. Guide the router smoothly and consistently along the desired path. Always route against the direction of bit rotation to maintain control and prevent kickback. For deep cuts, make multiple passes, increasing the depth with each pass.

Various router bit profiles and their resulting wood shapes, including straight cuts, roundovers, chamfers, and cove cuts.

5.3 Using Guides

  • Parallel Guide: Attach the parallel guide for routing straight lines parallel to the edge of the workpiece. Adjust the distance from the bit to the guide as needed.
  • Circular Guide: Use the circular guide to rout perfect circles or arcs. Secure the pivot point to the workpiece and adjust the radius.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Fartools ER 1300 router.

  • Cleaning: After each use, unplug the router and clean off any dust and debris from the motor housing, base, and collet area using a brush or compressed air. Do not use solvents.
  • Collet Inspection: Periodically inspect the collet and collet nut for wear or damage. Replace if necessary to ensure proper bit gripping.
  • Cord Inspection: Check the power cord for any cuts, fraying, or damage. Replace damaged cords immediately.
  • Carbon Brushes: The motor's carbon brushes may need periodic inspection and replacement. Refer to a qualified service technician for this procedure if you notice reduced power or excessive sparking.
  • Storage: Store the router in a dry, secure place, out of reach of children.
