3. Setup

3.1 Connecting the Recorder

3.1.1 HDMI Connection (Recommended)

  1. Connect one end of an HDMI cable (not included) to the HDMI OUT port on the recorder.
  2. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to an HDMI IN port on your television. Note the HDMI input number on your TV (e.g., HDMI 1).

3.1.2 Analog A/V Connection

  1. Connect the yellow (video), white (left audio), and red (right audio) RCA cables from the A/V OUT ports on the recorder to the corresponding A/V IN ports on your television.

3.1.3 Antenna/Cable Connection

  1. Disconnect your antenna or cable TV coaxial cable from your TV.
  2. Connect this cable to the ANTENNA IN (RF IN) port on the recorder.
  3. Connect a second coaxial cable (included) from the RF OUT port on the recorder to the ANTENNA IN port on your TV.

3.2 Initial Setup Wizard

After connecting all cables and plugging in the power cord, turn on your TV and select the correct input source (e.g., HDMI 1, Video 1) for the recorder. Then, power on the Magnavox MDR537H/F7.

  1. Language Selection: Follow the on-screen prompts to select your preferred language.
  2. Time Setting: Set the current time manually or select the option to synchronize with a local PBS station for automatic time updates. Accurate time setting is crucial for timer recordings.
  3. Channel Scan: Select the appropriate scan option based on your signal source:
    • Cable/Digital: For cable TV connections. This will scan for both analog and digital channels available through your cable service.
    • Antenna: For over-the-air (OTA) antenna connections. This will scan for digital broadcast channels.

Allow the scan to complete. This process may take several minutes. After the scan, verify that all desired channels are available.

  4. "Device Control Inactive" Message: If you see this message, it indicates that the recorder's "Fun Link" feature (for controlling the TV) is not active or configured. This does not affect the remote's ability to control the recorder itself.

  • Disc Tray: Keep the disc tray free of dust and debris. Avoid touching the lens inside the DVD drive.

5.2 Care and Storage

  • Place the recorder on a stable, level surface with adequate ventilation.
  • Avoid exposing the unit to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, or high humidity.
  • When not in use for extended periods, unplug the power cord.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 No Picture or Sound

  • Check Connections: Ensure all HDMI, A/V, and coaxial cables are securely connected to the correct ports on both the recorder and your TV.
  • TV Input: Verify that your TV is set to the correct input source (e.g., HDMI 1, Video 1) corresponding to where the recorder is connected.
  • Power Cycle: If experiencing sound issues, particularly after a power interruption, turn off the unit, unplug it from the power outlet for at least 30 minutes (or longer if necessary, up to a few hours), then plug it back in and restart.

6.2 Channel Reception Issues

  • Re-scan Channels: If channels are missing or reception is poor, perform a channel re-scan. Go to the setup menu and select the appropriate scan type (Cable/Digital or Antenna).
  • Important: Before performing a re-scan, make a note or take a picture of your timer programming, as a re-scan may erase these settings. Always select the correct source (Antenna OR Cable/Digital) for the re-scan.
  • Digital Signal Variability: Digital channels can be sensitive to signal strength and environmental factors. A channel may temporarily disappear or have no picture if the signal is too weak.

6.3 Remote Control Not Responding

  • Check Batteries: Replace the batteries in the remote control with fresh AA batteries.
  • Line of Sight: Ensure there is a clear line of sight between the remote control and the recorder's front panel sensor.
  • Button Size: Some buttons on the remote are small. Ensure you are pressing the correct button firmly.

6.4 Time Setting Issues

  • Manual Setting: If automatic time synchronization is unreliable, set the time manually in the setup menu.
  • Power Interruption: A power outage can cause the time and timer settings to be lost if the unit is unplugged for an extended period (over an hour). Reset the time and re-enter any timer programs if this occurs.
