Aguilar Tone Hammer Bass EQ Effect Pedal

Instruction Manual

Introduction

The Aguilar Tone Hammer is a versatile preamp and direct box designed for bass guitarists. It features a powerful 3-band equalizer with sweepable midrange frequencies, based on the OBP-3 preamp. The pedal also incorporates Aguilar's proprietary Adaptive Gain Shaping (AGS) circuitry, offering additional gain and EQ options for a wide range of tonal possibilities, from modern clean to vintage overdrive. Its robust design and flexible connectivity make it suitable for both studio recording and live performance.

Setup

Proper setup ensures optimal performance of your Tone Hammer pedal. Follow these steps for initial connection:

  1. Power Connection: The Tone Hammer operates on 18 volts. It can be powered by two 9-volt batteries, phantom power via the XLR output, or an optional universal power supply. Ensure the correct power source is connected to the 'DC IN' jack.
  2. Instrument Input: Connect your bass guitar to the 'IN' 1/4-inch jack on the pedal.
  3. Amplifier/Effects Loop Output: Connect the 'OUT' 1/4-inch jack to your amplifier's input or effects loop return.
  4. Direct Output (DI): For connecting directly to a mixing console or audio interface, use the XLR 'DI' output. This output features a 'PRE/POST' switch to select whether the signal sent to the mixer is before or after the Tone Hammer's EQ and AGS circuitry. The 'LIFT' switch provides a ground lift to eliminate hum if present.

Operating Instructions

The Tone Hammer offers intuitive controls for shaping your bass tone:

  • Engage Footswitch: Activates or bypasses the pedal's preamp section. When engaged, the blue LED illuminates.
  • AGS Footswitch: Engages the Adaptive Gain Shaping circuitry, adding an additional gain stage and EQ for a richer, more aggressive tone. When engaged, the red LED illuminates. Note that engaging AGS may result in a significant volume increase, requiring adjustment of the Master control.
  • Gain: Controls the input gain of the preamp. Adjust for desired signal level and saturation.
  • Treble: Adjusts high frequencies. Range: +/- 18 dB @ 4 kHz.
  • Mid Freq: Selects the center frequency for the Mid Level control. Range: 180 Hz to 1 kHz.
  • Mid Level: Boosts or cuts the midrange frequencies selected by the Mid Freq knob. Range: +/- 17 dB.
  • Bass: Adjusts low frequencies. Range: +/- 18 dB @ 40 Hz.
  • Master: Controls the overall output volume of the pedal.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Aguilar Tone Hammer, consider the following maintenance tips:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal's exterior. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the pedal in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures when not in use.
  • Battery Replacement: If using 9V batteries, replace them when the power indicator light dims or the sound quality degrades. Ensure proper polarity when inserting new batteries.
  • Cable Management: Use high-quality cables and ensure they are not excessively bent or strained to prevent damage to the jacks.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Tone Hammer, try these basic troubleshooting steps:

  • No Sound:
    • Check all cable connections (instrument, amplifier, power).
    • Ensure the pedal is receiving power (check power supply or batteries).
    • Verify the 'Engage' footswitch is active (blue LED illuminated).
    • Test with different cables and a different power source if possible.
  • Hum or Noise:
    • Engage the 'LIFT' switch on the DI output to address ground loop hum.
    • Ensure all power connections are secure and free from interference.
    • Try isolating the pedal from other electronic devices.
  • Unexpected Volume Changes:
    • Adjust the 'Master' control.
    • Be aware that engaging the 'AGS' footswitch can significantly increase volume; adjust 'Master' accordingly.
