Discharge Characteristics

A discharge time versus discharge current graph (at 25°C) illustrates the battery's performance under various load conditions. This graph shows how the battery voltage decreases over time for different constant current discharge rates (e.g., 0.8A, 1.71A, 5.4A, 18A, 54A).

Setup and Installation

  1. Inspection: Before installation, visually inspect the battery for any signs of damage, cracks, or leaks. Do not install a damaged battery.
  2. Terminal Type: The ES17-12S battery uses F2 (Faston Tab 250) terminals. Ensure your application's connectors are compatible with this terminal type.
  3. Polarity: Connect the positive (+) terminal of the battery to the positive lead of your device/system and the negative (-) terminal to the negative lead. Incorrect polarity can cause severe damage to the battery and connected equipment.
  4. Secure Connection: Ensure all connections are tight and secure to prevent arcing and power loss. Do not overtighten.
  5. Ventilation: Install the battery in a well-ventilated area, even though it is sealed.
  6. Positioning: The battery can be installed in any orientation except inverted (upside down).

Operating Instructions

Charging

Proper charging is crucial for battery life and performance. Use a charger specifically designed for sealed lead-acid batteries.

  • Cycle Use (Deep Cycle Applications):
    • Charging Voltage: 14.4 to 15.0V at 25°C (77°F)
    • Temperature Compensation Coefficient: -5.0mv/°C/cell
    • Maximum Charging Current: 5.4A
  • Standby Use (Float Applications):
    • Float Charging Voltage: 13.50 to 13.80V at 25°C (77°F)
    • Temperature Compensation Coefficient: -3.0mv/°C/cell
  • Operating Temperature Range for Charging: -15°C (5°F) to 40°C (104°F). Charging outside this range may reduce battery life or efficiency.

Discharging

  • Operating Temperature Range for Discharging: -15°C (5°F) to 50°C (122°F). Performance may vary outside this range.
  • Avoid deep discharges below the recommended voltage levels to prolong battery life. Refer to the discharge curve in the specifications for voltage limits under load.

Maintenance

The MK Battery ES17-12S is a maintenance-free battery, meaning it does not require water additions or electrolyte checks. However, proper care and storage are essential for maximizing its lifespan.

  • Cleaning: Keep the battery terminals and case clean and free of dirt or corrosion. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the battery. Do not use solvents.
  • Terminal Connections: Periodically check terminal connections for tightness. Loose connections can cause overheating and power loss.
  • Storage: If the battery is to be stored for an extended period, ensure it is fully charged before storage. Store in a cool, dry place within the recommended storage temperature range of -15°C (5°F) to 40°C (104°F).
  • Charge Retention (Shelf Life at 20°C / 68°F):
    • 1 month: 92% capacity retention
    • 3 months: 90% capacity retention
    • 6 months: 80% capacity retention
For optimal performance, recharge the battery if stored for more than 3-6 months to prevent irreversible capacity loss.

Troubleshooting

  • Battery Not Holding Charge:
    • Verify the charger is functioning correctly and is appropriate for sealed lead-acid batteries.
    • Check charging voltage and current settings against specifications.
    • Ensure battery terminals are clean and connections are secure.
    • Battery may have reached the end of its service life.
  • Low Voltage Output:
    • Battery may be undercharged; attempt a full charge cycle.
    • Check for excessive load on the battery.
    • Verify ambient temperature is within the operating range.
  • Overheating During Charge:
    • Reduce charging current if possible.
    • Ensure adequate ventilation around the battery.
    • Verify charging voltage is not too high.
