Setup
1. Battery Installation
The Speedlite 550EX uses four AA-size alkaline or Ni-MH batteries. Ensure correct polarity when inserting batteries.
- Open the battery chamber cover located on the side of the flash unit.
- Insert four AA batteries according to the polarity indicators (+/-).
- Close the battery chamber cover securely.
2. Attaching to Camera
The Speedlite 550EX can be mounted on a camera's hot shoe.
- Slide the mounting foot of the Speedlite into the camera's hot shoe until it clicks into place.
- Tighten the locking lever to secure the flash unit.
- To detach, loosen the locking lever and slide the flash unit off the hot shoe.
Operating Instructions
1. Power On/Off
To turn the Speedlite on, slide the power switch to the "ON" position. To turn it off, slide the switch to "OFF".
2. Flash Modes
The Speedlite 550EX supports various flash modes, including E-TTL II, E-TTL, TTL, Manual, and Multi (Stroboscopic) flash.
- E-TTL II/E-TTL/TTL: Automatic flash exposure control.
- Manual: Allows setting flash output manually from 1/1 to 1/128 power.
- Multi (Stroboscopic): Fires the flash multiple times during a single exposure.
3. Zoom Head Adjustment
The flash head automatically adjusts its zoom position to match the focal length of the lens. Manual adjustment is also possible.
4. Bounce Flash
The flash head can be tilted upwards and rotated horizontally for bounce flash photography, providing softer, more natural lighting.
- Tilt the flash head up to 90 degrees.
- Rotate the flash head up to 180 degrees to the left and 90 degrees to the right.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning
To maintain the performance and appearance of your Speedlite 550EX:
- Wipe the flash unit with a soft, dry cloth.
- For stubborn dirt, use a cloth lightly dampened with water and then wipe dry.
- Do not use organic solvents such as paint thinner or benzene.
2. Storage
When not in use for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and corrosion.
- Store the Speedlite in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
- Avoid storing in areas with extreme temperature fluctuations.
