Setup and Installation
- Prepare Grow Sponges: Gently separate the grow sponges. If they appear compressed from packaging, they will expand when moistened.
- Insert Seeds: Place 1-3 seeds into the small hole at the top of each grow sponge. The number of seeds depends on the plant type and desired density.
- Place in Grow Baskets: Insert each seeded grow sponge into an AeroGarden Grow Basket. Ensure the sponge is seated firmly within the basket.
- Install in AeroGarden: Place the assembled grow baskets into the designated openings of your AeroGarden unit.
- Add Water and Nutrients: Fill your AeroGarden reservoir with water to the fill line. Add the recommended amount of AeroGarden liquid plant food according to your model's instructions.
- Cover with Grow Domes (Optional): For optimal germination, especially in dry environments, place clear plastic grow domes over the baskets. Remove domes once seedlings emerge and touch the dome.

Operating Instructions
Once the grow sponges are set up in your AeroGarden, ensure the system's pump and grow lights are functioning correctly according to your specific AeroGarden model's manual. The sponges are designed to maintain the ideal balance of oxygen and water for your seeds.
- Monitoring Water Levels: Regularly check the water level in your AeroGarden reservoir and refill as needed.
- Nutrient Schedule: Follow the nutrient feeding schedule provided with your AeroGarden system or liquid plant food. Typically, nutrients are added every two weeks.
- Light Cycle: Ensure your AeroGarden's grow lights are set to the appropriate cycle for the plants you are growing.
- Thinning Seedlings: Once multiple seedlings emerge from a single sponge, thin them to the strongest one or two plants to allow for optimal growth.
Maintenance
- Sponge Replacement: Grow sponges are designed for single-use per plant cycle. Replace them with new sponges for each new planting.
- Cleaning: After each harvest or plant cycle, clean your AeroGarden system thoroughly to prevent algae buildup and ensure a healthy environment for new plants.
- Storage: Store unused grow sponges in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain their quality.
Troubleshooting
- Poor Germination: Ensure seeds are fresh and viable. Verify that the grow sponges are adequately moist but not waterlogged. Optimal temperature and light are crucial for germination.
- Algae Growth: Algae can occur due to excessive light exposure to the water reservoir or grow sponges. Ensure grow domes are used during early germination and remove them once seedlings are established. Regular cleaning of the system and proper nutrient levels can help.
- Sponge Integrity: If sponges appear overly aerated or do not wick water effectively, ensure they are fully hydrated before use. Some compression from packaging is normal and they will expand.
