3. Setup Instructions

  1. Attach Shock Mounts: Carefully screw each C20 microphone into its respective shock mount. The shock mount helps to isolate the microphone from vibrations and handling noise.
  2. Mount to Stand: Secure the shock mounts onto standard microphone stands. If using for stereo recording, attach both shock mounts to the provided stereobar, then mount the stereobar to a single microphone stand.
  3. Apply Windscreens: Gently slide the foam windscreens over the microphone capsules. This helps to reduce plosive sounds and wind noise.
  4. Connect XLR Cables: Connect a standard 3-pin XLR cable (not included) to the gold-plated XLR connector at the base of each microphone. Ensure a secure connection.
  5. Connect to Audio Interface/Mixer: Connect the other end of the XLR cables to your audio interface, mixer, or pre-amplifier. Ensure that the input channels are configured for microphone-level signals.
  6. Engage Phantom Power: The C20 is a condenser microphone and requires +48V phantom power to operate. Activate phantom power on the corresponding channels of your audio interface or mixer. Failure to provide phantom power will result in no sound output.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Microphone Placement

The placement of the microphone significantly impacts the recorded sound. Experiment with different distances and angles relative to the sound source to achieve the desired tone. For vocals, a distance of 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) is a common starting point. For instruments, consider the instrument's sound projection and the acoustic environment.

4.2 Cardioid Pickup Pattern

The C20 features a cardioid pickup pattern. This means it is most sensitive to sounds coming from the front of the microphone and rejects sounds from the sides and rear. This pattern is ideal for isolating a sound source and minimizing background noise or feedback in live settings. Ensure the front of the microphone (indicated by the logo or a dot) is pointed directly at the sound source.

4.3 Low-Cut Filter

Each C20 microphone is equipped with a switchable low-cut filter. This filter attenuates low frequencies, which can be useful for reducing rumble, handling noise, or proximity effect (an increase in bass response when the microphone is close to the sound source). Engage the low-cut filter by sliding the switch on the microphone body if you encounter excessive low-frequency content.

4.4 Gain Staging

Proper gain staging is crucial for optimal sound quality. Adjust the gain on your audio interface or mixer so that the input signal is strong but does not clip (distort). Aim for peak levels around -6dB to -10dB on your input meters to allow for headroom.

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the microphone body. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents, as they can damage the microphone's finish or internal components.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the microphones in their provided transport case to protect them from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
  • Windscreens: The foam windscreens can be gently hand-washed with mild soap and water if they become dirty. Ensure they are completely dry before reattaching them to the microphones.
  • Avoid Extreme Conditions: Do not expose the microphones to extreme temperatures, high humidity, or direct sunlight for extended periods.

6. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No sound output
  • No phantom power (+48V)
  • Faulty XLR cable
  • Incorrect input selection on mixer/interface
  • Microphone not properly connected
  • Activate +48V phantom power on your mixer/interface.
  • Test with a known good XLR cable.
  • Ensure the correct input channel is selected and gain is adjusted.
  • Verify all cable connections are secure.
Low or weak signal
  • Insufficient gain setting
  • Microphone too far from sound source
  • Increase the gain on your mixer/interface.
  • Move the microphone closer to the sound source.
Distorted sound
  • Excessive gain setting
  • Microphone overloaded by loud source
  • Decrease the gain on your mixer/interface.
  • Move the microphone further from the sound source.
Excessive bass/rumble
  • Proximity effect
  • Environmental low-frequency noise
  • Engage the low-cut filter on the microphone.
  • Increase distance from the sound source.
