Product Overview
The Waterway ClearWater II Above Ground Pool Cartridge Filter system is designed to provide efficient and reliable filtration for above-ground pools. This system combines a high-performance cartridge filter with a 1 HP Hi-Flo II pump, ensuring clear water and optimal circulation. It features wide-body filtration elements for maximum filtration without sacrificing flow rate, and includes an automatic air bleed capability for ease of use.

An overhead view of the Waterway ClearWater II Above Ground Pool Cartridge Filter system. It features a tall, grey cylindrical filter tank with a 'ClearWater' label, connected to a black 'HI-FLO' pump unit. A power cord extends from the pump, and a clear lid is visible on the pump's pre-filter basket.
Setup and Installation
1. Unpacking and Inspection
Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect all parts for any signs of damage during shipping. Ensure all listed components are present before proceeding with installation.
2. Placement
Position the filter and pump system on a firm, level surface, preferably concrete, as close to the pool as possible. Ensure the location allows for proper drainage and is protected from direct weather exposure if necessary. Allow sufficient space around the unit for maintenance and service.
3. Plumbing Connections
- Connect the pool's skimmer line (suction) to the inlet of the pump.
- Connect the pump's discharge port to the filter's inlet port.
- Connect the filter's outlet port to the pool's return line.
- Utilize the 1-1/2" FPT connections for secure and leak-free plumbing.
- Ensure all connections are tightened appropriately to prevent leaks.
4. Electrical Connection
Connect the 3 ft NEMA cord from the pump to a properly grounded electrical outlet. Ensure the electrical supply matches the pump's voltage requirements. Always use a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) for pool equipment for safety.
5. Priming the Pump
Before starting the pump, ensure the pump basket is filled with water. Open any air relief valves on the filter. Turn on the pump and allow it to prime. Once a steady stream of water is flowing from the return line, close the air relief valve.
Operating Instructions
Starting the System
After successful installation and priming, turn on the power to the pump. The system will begin circulating and filtering pool water. The automatic air bleed capability will help remove trapped air from the system during operation.
Monitoring Performance
Regularly check the flush-mounted stainless steel pressure gauge on the filter. A rising pressure indicates that the filter cartridge is accumulating debris and requires cleaning. The normal operating pressure will be established after the initial startup.
Shutting Down the System
To turn off the system, simply switch off the power to the pump at the electrical source. For extended shutdowns or maintenance, ensure the system is completely de-energized.
Maintenance
Filter Cartridge Cleaning
When the pressure gauge reading increases by 8-10 PSI above its clean operating pressure, or when water flow noticeably decreases, it's time to clean the filter cartridge. Follow these steps:
- Turn off the pump and disconnect power.
- Open the air relief plug to release pressure.
- Remove the heavy-duty lid using the handle.
- Carefully lift out the cartridge element.
- Rinse the cartridge thoroughly with a garden hose, working from top to bottom, ensuring all pleats are cleaned. For stubborn debris, a filter cleaning solution may be used.
- Inspect the cartridge for damage and replace if necessary.
- Reinsert the clean cartridge, replace the lid, and secure it.
- Re-prime the pump and restart the system.
Pump Basket Cleaning
Periodically check and clean the pump's pre-filter basket to remove leaves and large debris. This prevents clogging and maintains optimal pump performance.
Winterization
Before freezing temperatures arrive, drain all water from the filter and pump. Disconnect hoses and store the unit in a dry, protected area to prevent freeze damage.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Low Water Flow / High Pressure | Clogged filter cartridge; Clogged pump basket; Air leak in suction line. | Clean or replace filter cartridge; Clean pump basket; Check all suction line connections for leaks. |
| Pump Not Priming | Pump basket not full of water; Air leak in suction line; Clogged skimmer/main drain. | Fill pump basket with water; Check and tighten all suction connections; Clear skimmer/main drain. |
| Cloudy Pool Water | Dirty filter cartridge; Insufficient filtration time; Chemical imbalance. | Clean filter cartridge; Increase daily filtration time; Test and adjust pool chemistry. |
| Pump Not Starting | No power; Tripped breaker/GFCI; Motor issue. | Check power supply; Reset breaker/GFCI; Consult a qualified electrician or service technician. |
