Introduction
This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your SUNSOLAR 19-inch diameter Swimming Pool Sand Filter. Designed for durability and efficient water filtration, this unit helps maintain a clean and clear swimming pool environment.
The SUNSOLAR sand filter is constructed from high-density polyethylene, ensuring resistance to harsh outdoor conditions. It effectively removes suspended dirt and other particles from your pool water, contributing to a clean swimming experience.

Safety Information
- Always disconnect power to the pool pump before performing any service or maintenance on the filter system.
- Ensure all connections are secure and leak-free to prevent water damage or electrical hazards.
- Do not operate the filter system if any components are damaged or missing.
- This sand filter is designed for use with a pool pump (pump not included). Ensure your pump is appropriately sized for your pool and filter.
- Follow all local electrical and plumbing codes during installation.
- Keep children away from the filter system during operation and maintenance.
Setup and Installation
The SUNSOLAR sand filter is designed for straightforward installation. Please ensure you have all necessary components before beginning.
Components Included:
- Sand filter tank
- Multi-port valve
- Built-in drain
- Pressure gauge
- Flange clamp
Note: A pool pump is NOT included with this sand filter and must be purchased separately.
Installation Steps:
- Positioning the Filter: Place the filter tank on a firm, level surface, preferably concrete, as close to the pool as possible. Ensure adequate drainage and protection from direct sunlight or extreme weather.
- Adding Filter Media (Sand):
- Remove the multi-port valve and internal pipe assembly from the top of the tank.
- Cover the open end of the internal pipe to prevent sand from entering.
- Carefully add the specified amount of filter sand (approximately 175 lbs for this 19-inch model) into the tank. Ensure the sand is evenly distributed.
- Remove the cover from the internal pipe.
- Attaching the Multi-Port Valve:
- Ensure the O-ring is properly seated on the multi-port valve. Applying silicone grease to the O-ring can help ensure a good seal and ease of assembly.
- Carefully place the multi-port valve onto the tank, aligning it with the internal pipe.
- Secure the valve to the tank using the flange clamp. Tighten the clamp evenly.

- Connecting Plumbing:
- Connect the pool pump's discharge port to the "PUMP" port on the multi-port valve.
- Connect the "RETURN" port on the multi-port valve to the pool's return line.
- Connect a waste line to the "WASTE" port on the multi-port valve. This line should lead to an appropriate drainage area.
- Ensure all plumbing connections are tight and sealed to prevent leaks.
- Installing the Pressure Gauge: Screw the pressure gauge into the designated port on the multi-port valve.
Operating the Filter
The multi-port valve allows for various operational modes. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position.

Image: The 6-position multi-port valve, illustrating its seven functions for comprehensive pool maintenance, including Filter, Rinse, Winter, Waste, Recirculate, Backwash, and Closed.
Multi-Port Valve Functions:
- Filter: Normal filtering mode. Water flows through the sand bed, removing debris, and returns to the pool.
- Backwash: Cleans the filter by reversing water flow, flushing trapped debris out through the waste line. Perform when pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above starting pressure.
- Rinse: Used after backwashing to flush out any remaining dirty water from the filter and settle the sand bed before returning to filter mode.
- Waste: Bypasses the filter, sending water directly out the waste line. Used for vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste or lowering pool water level.
- Recirculate: Bypasses the filter, circulating water directly back to the pool. Used for chemical mixing without filtering.
- Closed: Shuts off all flow to the filter. Use only when pump is off and for servicing.
- Winter: (Often combined with Closed or a separate position) Prepares the filter for winterization by draining water from the valve.
Monitor the pressure gauge regularly. An increase in pressure indicates the filter needs backwashing.
Maintenance
Regular Backwashing:
Backwash your filter when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI higher than its clean operating pressure. This typically occurs every 1-2 weeks, depending on pool usage and debris load.
- Turn off the pool pump.
- Set the multi-port valve to "BACKWASH".
- Turn on the pump and run until the water in the sight glass (if present) or waste line runs clear (typically 2-3 minutes).
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the multi-port valve to "RINSE".
- Turn on the pump and run for 30-60 seconds to rinse the sand bed.
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the multi-port valve back to "FILTER".
- Turn on the pump to resume normal filtration.
Winterizing:
Proper winterization is crucial to prevent damage from freezing temperatures.
- Drain all water from the filter tank using the built-in drain plug at the bottom of the tank.
- Remove the multi-port valve and store it in a dry, protected area.
- Cover the filter tank to protect it from elements.
- Consult your pool professional for specific winterization procedures for your entire pool system.

Sand Replacement:
Filter sand typically needs replacement every 3-5 years, depending on usage. Refer to the "Adding Filter Media" section under Setup for the replacement process.
