2. Setup

2.1 Battery Installation and Removal

This DEWALT DCD780B is a bare tool and requires a DEWALT 20V MAX* Lithium Ion battery (sold separately). Ensure the battery is fully charged before use.

  1. To install the battery, align the battery pack with the receptacle on the tool's handle. Slide the battery into the tool until it locks securely in place.
  2. To remove the battery, press the release button located on the battery pack and pull the battery out of the tool.

2.2 Bit Installation and Removal

The drill features a 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck for secure bit retention.

  1. To install a drill bit or driver bit, grasp the rear half of the chuck with one hand and rotate the front half counter-clockwise until the chuck jaws are open wide enough to insert the bit.
  2. Insert the bit fully into the chuck.
  3. Grasp the rear half of the chuck and rotate the front half clockwise until the bit is securely tightened. A ratcheting sound indicates the chuck is tightening.
  4. To remove a bit, reverse the process: grasp the rear half of the chuck and rotate the front half counter-clockwise to loosen the jaws, then pull the bit out.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Powering On/Off and Variable Speed Trigger

The drill is activated by pressing the trigger switch. The speed is variable, meaning the further the trigger is pressed, the faster the drill operates.

  • To turn on, press the trigger switch.
  • To turn off, release the trigger switch.
  • For slower speeds, press the trigger lightly. For faster speeds, press the trigger fully.

3.2 Forward/Reverse Control

A forward/reverse button is located above the trigger to control the direction of rotation.

  • Push the button to the left for forward rotation (clockwise).
  • Push the button to the right for reverse rotation (counter-clockwise).
  • Center the button for the lock-off position, which prevents accidental starting.

3.3 Speed Selector

The drill features a two-speed gearbox for optimal performance in different applications.

  • Speed 1 (Low Speed, 0-600 RPM): Use for high-torque applications such as driving large fasteners or drilling large diameter holes.
  • Speed 2 (High Speed, 0-2,000 RPM): Use for fast drilling with smaller bits or light fastening tasks.

To change speeds, slide the speed selector switch located on top of the drill. Ensure the drill is stopped before changing speeds to prevent gear damage.

3.4 Clutch Settings

The adjustable clutch ring allows you to select the appropriate torque setting for driving screws, preventing over-driving or stripping. The numbers on the clutch ring correspond to different torque levels, with higher numbers indicating greater torque.

  • Rotate the clutch ring to select a setting. Start with a lower setting and increase as needed.
  • For drilling, set the clutch ring to the drill symbol (usually indicated by a drill bit icon) for maximum torque without clutch slippage.
