1. Setup

Follow these steps to correctly set up your Sony DAV-TZ140 Home Theater System.

1.1 Unpacking and Component Identification

Carefully unpack all components. Ensure you have the main unit (DVD player/receiver), subwoofer, center speaker, two front speakers, and two surround speakers.

1.2 Speaker Placement

Optimal sound performance depends on correct speaker placement. Position the center speaker directly above or below your TV. Place the front speakers equidistant from the TV, forming an equilateral triangle with your primary listening position. The surround speakers should be placed to the sides or slightly behind the listening area. The subwoofer can be placed anywhere in the room, preferably near a wall or corner for enhanced bass.

1.3 Connecting Components

1. Speakers: Connect each speaker cable to the corresponding color-coded terminal on the main unit. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -). The front, center, and surround speakers are 50-watt each, and the subwoofer is 50-watt.
2. HDMI Output: Connect an HDMI cable from the HDMI OUT port on the main unit to an HDMI input on your television. This connection sends a near-HD quality video signal to your TV.
3. Power: Plug the main unit's power cord into an AC outlet.

1.4 Initial Setup and Calibration

Insert the included Easy Setup disc into the main unit. Follow the on-screen instructions to calibrate your system for optimal sound performance in your room. This process helps adjust speaker levels and delays.

2. Operating Instructions

2.1 Basic Playback

Insert a DVD into the disc tray. The system will automatically begin playback. Use the remote control to navigate menus, play, pause, stop, and skip tracks/chapters.

2.2 1080p Upscaling

When playing DVDs, the system can upscale the video to near 1080p quality, providing a sharper and more detailed image on your compatible television.

2.3 USB Playback

Connect a USB device to the USB port on the front of the main unit. You can play compatible audio and video files stored on the USB device. Use the remote control to browse and select content.

2.4 BRAVIA Sync (HDMI CEC)

3.1 Cleaning

Wipe the exterior surfaces of the main unit and speakers with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cloths, scouring pads, or solvents such as alcohol or benzene, as these may damage the finish. Keep the disc tray and USB port free of dust and debris.

3.2 Disc Care

Handle discs by their edges to avoid fingerprints. Store discs in their cases when not in use to prevent scratches and dust accumulation.

4. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your system, refer to the following common problems and solutions.

4.1 No Power

• Ensure the power cord is securely plugged into both the system and a working AC outlet.
• Check if the power outlet is functional by plugging in another device.

4.2 No Sound or Low Sound Output

• Verify that all speaker cables are correctly connected to the main unit and speakers, ensuring proper polarity.
• Check the volume level on the system and your television.
• Ensure the correct input source is selected on the system (e.g., DVD, USB).
• Run the Easy Setup disc again to re-calibrate speaker levels.
• Confirm that the audio output settings on your TV or connected device are correctly configured for the home theater system.

4.3 No Picture or Poor Picture Quality

• Ensure the HDMI cable is securely connected between the system and your TV.
• Select the correct HDMI input on your television.
• Try a different HDMI cable if the issue persists.

4.4 Remote Control Not Working

• Replace the batteries (2 AA batteries required).
• Ensure there are no obstructions between the remote control and the system's remote sensor.
