2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when working with lawn care equipment. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or property damage.

  • Read the Mower Manual: Before installing or using this kit, thoroughly read and understand the entire instruction manual for your MTD Smart MiniRider 60 RD or 60 RDE lawn tractor.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear appropriate PPE, including safety glasses, gloves, and sturdy footwear, when handling mower blades or working on the equipment.
  • Engine Off and Key Removed: Ensure the lawn tractor engine is turned off, the spark plug wire is disconnected, and the ignition key is removed before performing any installation, maintenance, or adjustments.
  • Hot Surfaces: Allow the engine and exhaust system to cool down before working near them to prevent burns.
  • Sharp Blades: Mower blades are sharp. Handle them with extreme care to avoid cuts. Consider wearing heavy-duty gloves.
  • Secure Installation: Ensure all components are securely fastened according to the instructions. Loose parts can become projectiles during operation.

4. Setup and Installation

This kit is specifically designed for MTD Smart MiniRider 60 RD and 60 RDE models. Ensure your lawn tractor is compatible before proceeding.

4.1 Preparing Your Lawn Tractor

  1. Park the lawn tractor on a flat, level surface.
  2. Turn off the engine and remove the ignition key.
  3. Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting.
  4. Allow the engine and muffler to cool down completely.
  5. Engage the parking brake.

4.2 Installing the Mulching Blades

If your existing blades are not mulching blades, or if they are worn, replace them with the mulching blades provided in the kit.

  1. Carefully tilt the mower deck or lift the front of the tractor to access the underside of the deck. Use appropriate support stands for safety.
  2. Using a wrench, remove the bolt holding the existing blade in place. Note the orientation of the blade for correct installation of the new one.
  3. Remove the old blade.
  4. Install the new mulching blade, ensuring the cutting edge faces the correct direction (usually indicated by an arrow or "grass side" marking).
  5. Tighten the blade bolt securely to the manufacturer's specified torque. Refer to your lawn tractor's main manual for torque specifications.

4.3 Installing the Mulching Plug

The mulching plug is inserted into the discharge chute opening to seal it, allowing grass clippings to be recirculated under the deck for finer cutting.

  1. Locate the discharge chute on the side of your mower deck.
  2. Lift the discharge chute cover.
  3. Insert the mulching plug firmly into the discharge opening. Ensure it fits snugly and creates a seal.
  4. Lower the discharge chute cover over the mulching plug to secure it in place. Some models may have clips or pins to further secure the plug.

4.4 Installing the Side Discharge Deflector

The side discharge deflector is used when you want to discharge clippings out the side of the mower, typically for faster mowing without bagging or mulching.

  1. If the mulching plug is installed, remove it first.
  2. Position the side discharge deflector over the discharge opening.
  3. Align the deflector's mounting points with the corresponding holes or pins on the mower deck.
  4. Secure the deflector using the appropriate hardware (e.g., bolts, pins). Ensure it is firmly attached and pivots correctly if designed to do so.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Mulching Operation

Mulching returns finely cut grass clippings to the lawn, acting as a natural fertilizer. This is ideal for regular mowing of dry grass.

  • Ensure the mulching plug is correctly installed (refer to Section 4.3).
  • Remove the side discharge deflector if it is installed.
  • For best mulching results, mow when the grass is dry and cut no more than one-third of the grass blade length at a time.
  • Maintain a consistent, moderate speed. Mowing too fast can lead to clumping.

5.2 Side Discharge Operation

Side discharge is useful for cutting taller or damp grass, or when you prefer to leave clippings on the lawn without mulching them finely.

  • Ensure the side discharge deflector is correctly installed (refer to Section 4.4).
  • Remove the mulching plug if it is installed.
  • Direct the discharge chute away from people, pets, and obstacles.
  • Adjust your mowing pattern to distribute clippings evenly.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your mulching kit and deflector.

  • Clean After Each Use: After each mowing session, clean grass clippings and debris from the mulching plug, deflector, and underside of the mower deck. This prevents buildup and maintains efficiency.
  • Inspect Blades: Regularly inspect the mulching blades for sharpness, damage, or imbalance. Sharpen or replace blades as needed. Refer to your lawn tractor manual for blade sharpening guidelines.
  • Check Fasteners: Periodically check all bolts and fasteners securing the mulching plug and deflector. Tighten any loose hardware.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the components in a clean, dry place, protected from the elements.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your mulching kit or deflector, consider the following common solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Poor Mulching Quality (large clippings, clumping)
  • Grass is too tall or wet.
  • Mowing speed is too fast.
  • Blades are dull or damaged.
  • Mulching plug not properly sealed.
  • Mow more frequently, when grass is dry.
  • Reduce mowing speed.
  • Sharpen or replace blades.
  • Ensure mulching plug is securely installed.
Ineffective Side Discharge
  • Discharge chute clogged.
  • Deflector not properly installed.
  • Mulching plug still in place.
  • Clear any blockages from the chute (engine off, key removed!).
  • Verify deflector installation.
  • Remove mulching plug for side discharge.
Excessive Vibration
  • Damaged or unbalanced blade.
  • Loose blade bolt.
  • Inspect and replace damaged blades.
  • Tighten blade bolt to specified torque.

If problems persist, consult your MTD dealer or authorized service center.
